On May 5 the Peter Coleman - Bob Jahelka - John Kufs third grade lacrosse team hosted Farmingdale's undefeated "A" division team (3-0). As they have done in all four games this season, the Rams (3-1) jumped out to an early lead (2-0) on goals by Danny Flynn and crease attackman Evan Heinze (3G). Farmingdale answered with two second-quarter power-play goals as the first half ended in a 2-2 tie.
Following a boisterous halftime pep talk by Coach Coleman, the Rams responded with four unanswered goals en-route to an impressive 8-4 victory. Instrumental in Garden City's second half resurgence were the defensive efforts of Shane Thornton (1G, 1A) and Steve Jahelka (1A), who both lead the Rams in dominating ball possession.
Goaltenders Drew McAward and Danny Flynn stepped up when tested and D-Dogs Mike Borges, Will Ruddy, Brendan McGovern, Brian Noonan and Tommy Martis rounded out a Ram's defense that has yielded a paltry 3.7 goals allowed per game. Austin Kufs (2G), Brian Coleman, Matt Clarkson (1A), Tommy O'Brien, James Raphael, Michael Decker and Ryan Buser composed a continuous wave of relentless, midfield ball pursuit and checking that frustrated Farmingdale to no end. Attackmen Griffin McQuilling (1G), Joe Horan and Sean Skramko provided Garden City with effective spacing and aggressive rides.
Bump, set, spike! The Garden City volleyball program will be sending its first ever representative to the Junior National Volleyball Championships next month. Garden City High School varsity sophomore Christine Beihoff, a 15-year-old outside hitter, will be competing for the gold with her club team, Creole Big Apple Volleyball Club. This 16-year-old team will take part in this prestigious national tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah, June 26-July 7.
Beihoff's quest for the nationals began with team tryouts at the conclusion of her varsity season in November. The 16-1 team earned its berth at the nationals by its composite winnings at tournaments throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Maryland, and is currently the number one ranked 16-year-old team in the Garden Empire Volleyball Association (GEVA).
GEVA is the local region of USA Volleyball (USAV, the National Governing Body of Volleyball) that is responsible for the promotion of volleyball playing in New Jersey, New York City, Long Island, Westchester and Rockland, Dutchess, Putnam and Ulster Counties and a small portion of western Connecticut.
Beihoff, in her second season with Creole Big Apple VBC, has two remaining tournaments on her schedule before the nationals: one at Queens College (May 12) and the other at Penn State University (Memorial Day Weekend).
With the increasing popularity of volleyball at the high school and middle school and the record number of girls playing club volleyball and attending camps this year, this could be a sign of things to come. Good luck to Beihoff and Creole in Utah and bring home the gold.
