The Garden City Recreation Department will be holding the following camps this summer. Please watch this column in the following weeks for upcoming announcements and details on each particular camp. All grade and age requirements will be strictly enforced.

The recreation department will again run its popular preschool camp, held at St. Paul's Cluett Hall under the direction of Pat Haas-Leonanko. Any child who is a resident of the village and is 3.5 years through 5 years old by the start of the session is eligible to attend. A copy of the child's birth certificate is necessary at time of registration. The camp will run on one-week sessions from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The cost of a one-week session will be $60. The preschool camp will run the following weeks:

Session 1 - July 8-12

Session 2 - July 29 - August 2

Session 3 - August 5-9

Session 4 - August 12-16

Session 5 - August 19-23

To register by mail immediately (the recreation department is not responsible for delays in the mail) a registration form may be picked up at village hall or St. Paul's and sent to the recreation department at 351 Stewart Avenue. All forms must be filled out completely, have payment attached and be accompanied by a copy of a birth certificate in order to be accepted. All checks should be made payable to the "Inc. Village of Garden City."

For those who'd like to make up their own form, include all of the following information: child's name, address, phone number, emergency number, date of birth, the words "preschool camp," and which number session with the dates the child would like to attend. Sign the bottom and return to the recreation department at 351 Stewart Avenue with a check made out to the "Inc. Village of Garden City" and a copy of the child's birth certificate. The recreation department will be conducting a youth soccer camp for boys and girls who are residents of the village during the weeks of Aug. 5 and Aug. 12 at Community Park. Youngsters must be 6 by the start of the camp and attending first grade in Sept. 2002. There will be two sessions. The two-hour session will run from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and will focus on skill development. The five-hour session will include an hour break for lunch and a swim session, supervised by the soccer camp staff, followed by field games. The price of the two-hour session will be $55; the five-hour session will cost $110.

The Garden City Recreation Dance Ensemble, a group of very talented young performers, is pleased to announce that tickets are now on sale for their upcoming presentation titled Heroes. The ensemble will perform in Olmstead Theatre at Adelphi University on Friday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, May 18, at 7 p.m. The price for each ticket will be $8.

The recreation department began accepting roster packages for the upcoming Men's "Over 35" Softball League on April 15. This league plays games on Sunday evenings throughout the spring and summer. Rosters will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis from teams meeting the following eligibility requirements:

-Teams must be comprised of current residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City.

-All players must be over 35 years of age or turning 35 years during the course of the season.

The fee for this league will be $350, which includes games, balls, umpires and end-of-season trophies. Applications will not be accepted without a completed roster package (including name, address and phone number of each player), a copy of each player's current driver's license and a check for the full amount of the league fee. Roster packages are now available at the recreation office in village hall. The deadline for submitting completed applications will be Tuesday, April 30 or when the recreation department receives 10 complete roster packages, whichever comes first.

The Garden City Recreation Department, under the direction of head tennis pros Susan Tarzian and Carrie Strum, has set up a schedule of summer lessons for adults 18 years and older who are residents of the village. These one-hour lessons will be held in the evenings on a two-week rotation starting Monday, May 13. For more information or to register for a session, go the recreation department and pick up an application form.
