Three members of the Garden City Wings Freshmen Hockey Team have been chosen to play for the Nassau County High School All-Star Team. Defenseman Brian Collins, who enjoyed a great season all around demonstrating great two-way hockey; Goalie Greg McNamara, who was superb in the nets for the Wings and displayed why he was one of the league's top goalies; and Right Wing Mike Noone, who scored 18 goals for the Wings while establishing himself as one of the league's top checkers, will all play on the team.
For the second time this season, the Adelphi University women's lacrosse team held off a late second half rally to hold off its opponent. Adelphi defeated Manhattanville 12-11 at Stiles Field. Catherine Perez led the team in scoring with four goals and one assist. Jen Garone added three goals and one assist. Adelphi moves to 3-0, while Manhattanville drops to 2-2.
Senior Christina Forsythe and freshman Tonia Trapani helped lead Adelphi to a 2-0 record last week in the NYCAC, capturing Adelphi's second straight NYCAC weekly honors.
Forsythe, named NYCAC Player of the Week, collected three hits in five at-bats for the Panthers, who took two conference contests from New York Tech. She also added two runs and three RBIs including a two-run homerun in the second game against the Bears.
Trapani earned her first Rookie of the Week nod, hitting .800 (4.5) in two games as Adelphi swept NYCAC rival NY Tech. This included a perfect 3-3 performance with three RBIs in the first game of the doubleheader.
Adelphi University women's basketball coach Kim Barnes-Arico was named the Met Basketball Writers Association Coach of the Year. For the second time in as many years, junior forward Alexis Seeley was named to the All-Met team.
Barnes-Arico led the Panthers to a spectacular 28-3 record, advancing to the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional finals for the first time in school history. The 2002 season was filled with historic moments as Adelphi captured its first-ever NYCAC tournament and regular season championships. For her efforts, she earned her second NYCAC Coach of the Year nod. Barnes-Arico, in her third year with Adelphi, is 65-24, leading the Panthers to three consecutive winning seasons. In five years as a head coach, she is 94-72.
Seeley led Adelphi to the NYCAC championships and an appearance in the NCAA Northeast Regional finals. She averaged 12.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.3 steals and was named the NYCAC Player of the Year and Daktronics First Team All-Region. In 2001, Seeley was named the METBWA Player of the Year after leading her team to a then-school record 19 wins.
With a 21-0 start, the Panthers held the longest win streak in Divisions II and III. Adelphi cracked the national rankings for the first time in school history coming in at No. 24 on January 24. The Panthers finished the season as No. 13, their highest ranking.
