In a bizarre course of events that occurred late last week, Nassau County Legislator Dennis Dunne, Sr. (R-Levittown), who currently serves the 15th Legislative District, announced his candidacy for New York State Senate but in less than 24 hours, reneged on his decision to run.
If Dunne followed through on his challenge, he would have been vying for fellow Republican State Senator Kemp Hannon's seat during an upcoming primary.
Dunne was expected to officially announce his plans during a press conference at his mother's Levittown home last week but canceled it, according to a spokesperson from his office.
Republican Party spokesperson Anthony Santino said Party Chairman Joseph Mondello and the party would have fully supported Senator Hannon's re-election effort if a primary took place.
Hannon, who is recuperating from prostate cancer surgery at his Garden City home, said Friday, "I have been proud to represent the Sixth Senate District for more than a decade and look forward to serving the people of the district in coming years.
"I have been privileged to have a leadership role in the Senate as chair of the Health Committee and it has been gratifying to play a role in strengthening New York's healthcare system by helping people access the healthcare they need."
Legislative Minority Leader Peter Schmitt opted not to comment at this time. Dunne failed to return numerous phone calls last week.
