I have followed the reports about Adelphi University's request to build a new residence hall. As a resident of Garden City, I support Adelphi University's plan for the construction of a new residence hall on campus. The proposed location is perfect for the university and the neighborhood.
The new building, which represents the beginning of an exciting future for Adelphi, will be well screened by trees and professional landscaping. It will be a beautiful addition to Adelphi's 75-acre campus. Adelphi needs the residence hall to stay competitive and attract students. Having the university in my neighborhood has not been a detriment to my property value. Adelphi, its students and faculty have been wonderful neighbors. The free lectures, performing arts, community programs such as The Breast Cancer Hotline, and athletic events add to the quality of life in Garden City.
The proposed location has been approved by the Planning Commission (unanimously), the board of trustees when it adopted the required "negative declaration" and the Estates Property Owners Association. I hope this is not one more in a long list of decisions delayed by the sitting mayor. Adelphi and Dr. Robert Scott, Adelphi's president, have made great strides to bring the university to the level we can be proud of as residents and neighbors.
I urge the village to listen to professional judgments and the Estates POA and approve the university's request. Congratulations Adelphi and best wishes for a brilliant future.
