Aristotle: Excellence Is Not a Singular Event
For years, the Westinghouse Science Competition was the most highly publicized science contest in the nation. In 1999, however, the Westinghouse Corporation discontinued its sponsorship and the Intel Corporation took it over, renaming it the Intel Science Talent Search. More recently, in 2000, the Siemen's Corporation inaugurated a new science contest to be known as the "Siemen's Westinghouse Competition." As a result, today's gifted and motivated high school students have the opportunity to enter two prestigious competitions and vie for honors and awards. Both competitions are nationwide in scope and intensively competitive.

Saks Initiative Raises Funds for Maurer Foundation
The Maurer Foundation recently received grant funds from the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer (FTBC) Garden City promotion, hosted by Saks Fifth Avenue back in October. The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Foundation issued a $3,788 check while the local Saks store presented it to the Maurer Foundation in late December - just two months after the promotion ended.

GCAA Spring Little League Baseball/Girls Softball Registration
Open registration for Little League Baseball and Girls Softball is under way. Preprinted applications were mailed to all participants who played last spring. Additional applications are available at the Garden City Recreation Department in Village Hall and St. Paul's or may be printed from the website http://www.gc-aa.com

Recreation Department News
The recreation department will again hold another sixth-grade "Rec Night" Friday, Feb. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the St. Paul's field house. Admission will be $4 and there will be a nominal charge for snacks. The recreation staff will supervise this night.
