The Winter Chess Club for grades 3 to 7 began Saturday, Jan. 12 from noon to 2 p.m. in the small meeting room of the Garden City Library. Paul Dooher will again run this exciting program. No registration is required. For further information please contact the recreation office at 465-4075.

The Recreation Department will hold a "Rec Night" for all eighth graders on Friday, Feb. 1 at St. Paul's Field House. The party will run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and will be supervised by the recreation staff.

Admission will be $4 and refreshments will be available at a nominal charge. A DJ will provide music and the gym will be available for basketball, volleyball and other games.

Parents Please Note: Students will not be permitted to loiter outside of the field house during the party. Once the students enter the field house, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. An adult must pick up all children by 9:30 p.m.

This is your last chance to buy tickets for the winter events at Nassau Coliseum. We receive the best "group sale" tickets available for each event. We still have tickets for the following events:

Not sure what to do during the winter months? The Recreation Department has ongoing programs open to residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. There are no sign ups necessary for the following programs, though proof of residency is needed. All programs are held in the field house at St. Paul's unless otherwise noted.

For everyone: Family Fun Time on Sundays from 12-3:30 p.m.

For children Grades 3-6: Chess club on Saturdays from 12-2 p.m. This program is held at the GC Library.

For boys in Grades 3-5: Organized games and activities supervised by the recreational staff on Mondays from 3:30-6 p.m.

For girls in Grades 3-5: Organized games and activities supervised by the recreational staff on Fridays from 3:30-6 p.m.

For students in Grades 6-8: Open gym every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30-5:30 p.m.

For students in Grades 9-12: Open gym every Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30-5:30 p.m.

For Adults: Co-ed volleyball every Thursday from 7:30-9:30 p.m.

For Adult Women: Open basketball every Thursday from 7:30-10 p.m.

For Adult Men: Open basketball every Monday and Wednesday from 7:30-10 p.m.

For Adult Men Over 30: Open basketball every Tuesday from 7:30-10 p.m.

For Adult Men Over 40: Open basketball every Monday and Wednesday from 7:30-10 p.m.

The recreation department will be offering jazz and tap classes for adults at Cluett Hall. These classes are open to adult residents of the Village of Garden City and will be taught by Felicia Lovaglia-Donohue. The lessons began the week of Jan. 20 according to the following schedule:

By mail - send a note with your name, address, phone number and the class you would like along with a check payable to "Inc. Village of Garden City" to the recreation office at 351 Stewart Avenue. A new dance class is forming for teens in fifth grade and up. The class will be an intermediate/advanced ballet class. Taught by Felicia Lovaglia-Donohue, the class will be held on Thursdays at 3:30 starting Feb. 7. All dance classes are held in Cluett Hall at the St. Paul's building. The class will run 10 weeks and cost $60. To register, please follow the instructions listed in the dance article below. Use the code "2BALLET" when listing the class preferred. The recreation department is pleased to announce the start of the 2nd session of Dance Conservatory classes. The Conservatory is a non-recital program that is dedicated to providing residents of the Village quality, low cost dance instruction in a non-competitive and positive environment.

Classes will be held at Cluett Hall beginning the week of Feb. 4. Children age 4 and up who are residents of the village of Garden City are eligible to register.

To register: By mail immediately, we cannot be held responsible for delays in the mail. Walk-in registration will not begin until Tuesday, Jan. 29. Registration forms can be picked up in the Recreation office in Village Hall. In lieu of a form, submit a note with your child's name, birth date, address, phone number and grade and indicate by code your first and second choice of classes. Full payment must accompany the registration form. Make all checks payable to the "Inc. Village of Garden City."

Mail the form, with payment, to the Recreation Department at 351 Stewart Ave.

The Country Jamboree is great fun for anyone who wants to try their hand at country style line dancing and two steppin." The recreation department will present this night "for adults only" on Saturday, Feb. 2, in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's School.

The doors will open at 7:30 p.m. for some instructional dancing and music by Six Gun and at 8 p.m. we will get into full swing! To make the evening carefree, the admission price of $25 per person will also include a country chicken and rib dinner served family-style, snacks and soda.

Advanced reservations are a must for the popular program and payment is required in advance. To reserve your spot at the Jamboree, please call the Recreation Department at 465-4075. All reservations must be made by Wednesday, Jan. 30.
