The Winter Chess Club for grades 3 to 7 began Saturday, Jan. 12 from noon to 2 p.m. in the small meeting room of the Garden City Library. Paul Dooher will again run this exciting program. No registration is required. For further information please contact the Recreation Office at 465-4075.

The Recreation Department will be offering jazz and tap classes for adults at Cluett Hall. These classes are open to adult residents of the Village of Garden City and will be taught by Felicia Lovaglio-Donohue. The lessons will begin the week of Jan. 20 according to the following schedule:

Tap Tuesdays starting Jan 22 10:30-11:30 a.m. $78

Stretch Fridays starting Feb. 15 9:45-10:45 a.m. $54

Jazz Fridays starting Feb. 22 10:45-11:45 a.m. $66

To register: In person - come to the Recreation Office in Village Hall, located at 351 Stewart Avenue. By mail - send a note with your name, address, phone number and the class you would like along with a check payable to "Inc. Village of Garden City" to the Recreation Office at 351 Stewart Avenue. The second session of adult tennis lessons will begin in February. In order to tailor the lessons to the needs of our adult community, any adult village resident who would like to take lessons should come to the Recreation Department in Village Hall and fill out a tennis interest sheet. The classes will then be set up by grouping people according to their ability level and the days they are available.

In order to best set up these classes, we ask that any interested resident fill out an interest sheet by Friday, Jan. 25. Please call the department at 465-4075 for more information.

There are limited openings available for the second session of children's swimming lessons that will begin on Saturday, Jan. 26 in the Woodruff Hall Swimming Facility at Adelphi University. This session is open to children who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City only. Please note that children must be 6 by Jan. 26 in order to sign up for lessons. Any child who is attending swim lessons for the first time must provide a copy of their birth certificate. Classes are taught by Red Cross Certified swimming instructors and cost $31.50. The classes offered will be as follows:

Come to the recreation office to get a form or list your child's name, address, phone number, birth date, and a first and second choice of swim classes on a sheet of paper. Please mail this information along with a check made payable to "Inc. Village of Garden City" to the recreation office at 351 Stewart Ave.

Want to get back into shape? Join the recreation department's aerobic classes. These classes are held at Cluett Hall in the St. Paul's School according to the following schedule (schedule starts the week of Jan. 27):

To join a class, just show up at Cluett at any given day and pay $4 per class. If you want to become a "regular" or want to save money you may purchase a card for 20 classes at a cost of $60. For further information, please call the recreation department at 465-4075.

Did you know that the Centennial soccer club has its own website? Please log on to www.gccentennialsoccer.org for soccer news and information. Applications for spring intramural soccer are now available and are due back by March 1. Children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall are eligible to play soccer in the spring. Intramural soccer is open to boys in Pre-K through grade six and to girls in Pre-K to grade 12. Please pick up applications at the Recreation Office in Village Hall or off the website at www.gccentennialsoccer.org.

The Garden City Centennial Soccer Club is now looking for individuals who would be interested in coaching boys and girls born between Aug. 1, 1992 and Dec. 31, 1993 at the travel level. The position would begin with the September 2002 travel season. Interested individuals should contact Sandy Young at 739-1305 for further information or to receive an application. All applications must be received by Jan. 31 in order to be considered.

The Country Jamboree is great fun for anyone who wants to try their hand at country style line dancing and two steppin." The Recreation Department will present this night "for adults only" on Saturday, Feb. 2, in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's School.

The doors will open at 7:30 p.m. for some instructional dancing and music by Six Gun and at 8 p.m. we will get into full swing! To make the evening carefree, the admission price of $25 per person will also include a country chicken and rib dinner several family style snacks and soda.

Advanced reservations are a must for the popular program and payment is required in advance. To reserve your spot at the Jamboree, please call the Recreation Department at 465-4075. All reservations must be made by Wednesday, Jan. 30.

The Recreation Department is pleased to announce the start of the 2nd session of Dance Conservatory classes. The Conservatory is a non-recital program that is dedicated to providing residents of the Village quality, low cost dance instruction in a non-competitive and positive environment.

Classes will be held at Cluett Hall beginning the week of Feb. 4. Children age 4 and up who are residents of the village of Garden City are eligible to register.
