Michael Collins passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 4, 2002. Michael grew up in New Hyde Park and moved to Garden City a few years ago. He is survived by his brother, John and his wife Patty; his sister, Maureen Remson; and his nephew Tim Remson. The family was cared for by the Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home, New Hyde Park. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Anne's RC Church. Interment St. John's Cemetery, Middle Village. As a tribute to his uncle, Tim prepared the music and was the vocalist for the mass.
In his 48 years, Michael touched many people. At the funeral mass, Msgr. John Gilmartin spoke of Mike's ability to draw people to him. And what a gift Michael had. All who came in contact with him loved him. Children remember him as the man who stopped the ice cream truck and let them get whatever they wanted; many remember him coming on Christmas Eve with huge beautiful poinsettia plants. The people in his apartment building will remember him for all the kind deeds he did. If Michael knew you needed anything, he did what he could to help you.
Mike and his brother John spent a lot of time together. John knew how kind and generous his brother was - at the wake all this was affirmed. Mike's friends and acquaintances told story after story of special kindness' Mike had done for them. John wasn't surprised; he knew Mike would give you the shirt off his back.
Michael loved playing golf and he loved the Irish. His life was short and during that time he left his mark. May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sunshine warm upon your face. And rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of His hand. Rest in peace!
