At approximately 1:55 p.m. last Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 4, Garden City police pulled over a 23-year-old male Garden City resident for a seat belt violation on Washington Avenue and Chestnut Street. A subsequent investigation revealed the subject had a bench warrant for a felony criminal mischief in New York City.
The subject, after police checked his license, fled eastbound at a high rate of speed in the wrong direction on Chestnut Street, according to reports, making numerous driving infractions in the vicinity of St. James Street, Magnolia Avenue and Chestnut Street.
When the subject later stopped his vehicle, he began fleeing on foot through the residential properties in the area. Officer Grimes was called in to that location and while responding to the scene, was involved in an auto accident. He was taken to Winthrop-University Hospital with neck injuries. The other car involved in the accident had two occupants, both of whom suffered neck and shoulder injuries. They were also taken to Winthrop-University Hospital for observation.
Garden City Police Officer Touhy, also called to the scene, pursued the subject on foot. Police reports indicate the subject resisted arrest when Officer Touhy tried to handcuff him. The subject was charged with reckless driving, resisting arrest, no seat belt, aggravated unlicensed operation and a bench warrant.
