The Lawrence High School football team remained unbeaten, defeating a courageous Garden City team in a Nassau County Conference II playoff game by a score of 14-6. The Garden City defense was able to hold the Lawrence offense scoreless in the first half with a gutsy effort. However, except for some good running by Dan Flannery at the end of the first half, the Garden City offense was held in check.

In the third quarter the explosive Lawrence attack got on the scoreboard behind the running of quarterback Rob Blount who showed his speed on a 43-yard option play to the Garden City 11-yard line. Another quarterback option brought the ball to the Garden City 1-yard line where fullback Tasker ran the ball in for the first score of the game. The kick was good and Lawrence led 7-0.

Garden City responded with a 78-yard scoring of its own. The drive was highlighted by a 45-yard run by Dan Flannery on an option play that brought the ball to the Lawrence 19-yard line. Then on second down and 11-yards to go, Conor O'Brien threw a screen pass to Dan Flannery in the right flat and Flannery made a beautiful run to the Lawrence 8-yard line where it was first and goal. From there Brendan Flanagan ran threw a big hole off right tackle for a 5-yard touchdown run. Great blocking by Jon Watras, Greg Pando and Mark Gallucci allowed Flanagan to score. The kick was no good and Lawrence led 7-6.

In the fourth quarter a beautiful 27-yard pass from Lawrence quarterback Rob Blount to wide receiver Sheldon Nunn brought the ball to the Garden City 35-yard line. Another pass to Nunn in the left flat gave Lawrence a first down at the 21-yard line. Lawrence then pounded the ball down to the 2-yard line behind the running of tailback Mikeal Butler. From there quarterback Rob Blount rolled out around right end for a touchdown to make the final score Lawrence 14 Garden City 6. The Trojans ended the season with a valiant effort against a highly explosive Lawrence team.

The Garden City girls' field hockey team made their way to Syracuse on Friday morning prepared to face Brewster - their competition to the finals. The journey to the finals had been long. The girls had an amazing season; remaining undefeated throughout. They were fully prepared for the states; they had been practicing for them all year.

Their first game in Syracuse was "a tough one." The girls faced Brewster in a semi-final match-up. Erin Daly was the only GC player to score in regulation play off a penalty corner. Brewster also managed to put one away against goalie Amie Roe to tie the game.

The girls went into a shoot out. In this round, each team takes 5 penalty shots and the best of 5 wins the game. With both teams tied at 2, goalie Amie Roe made an amazing diving save to keep the game at 2 a piece. Then, sophomore Lauren Gallagher took her final penalty shot (she had scored on her previous shot to make the game 2 all). Gallagher took a terrific shot that whizzed past the Brewster goalie to give GC the win.

Garden City was always on the attack. The Brewster goalie had more than triple the amount of saves as Roe. The GC defense wouldn't let Brewster through; Roe only had and needed 3 saves in the game. The saves she did make were very key to the GC win over Brewster. The GC defense was lead by Fiore and Rose, who never let the ball get close to Roe. All the girls played great to achieve this great win.

Nearly 300 runners successfully completed the Second Annual Run for Their Lives Long Island Track and Field (LITF) Cross Country Championship Race on Oct. 28. The race consisted of an 8K course at Bethpage State Park. Award winners from Garden City included John Di Camillo,45, who finished the race in 29:20, and Brandon Parlante, 19, who finished the race in 29:46.

The Greater Long Island Running Club, with GLIRC President Mike Polansky serving as race director, administered the run for LITF. The primary sponsor of the event was Pfizer.

The entire net proceeds of the event were dedicated to North Shore Animal League America, with NSALA Project Coordinator Mira Liebstein coordinating things from that end and Dr. Sherrie Hartke, NSALA's chief of veterinary services, on hand for the event as well. NSALA is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for orphaned animals by finding the best possible home for each pet in its care - even if the pet is blind, deaf or otherwise disabled - and the funds raised from the Run for Their Lives race will go directly to furthering NSALA's efforts in that regard.

Any child interested in playing on intramural tournament teams for the winter season should call Sandy Young at 739-1305 for further information or to indicate interest. This program is open to boys and girls in grades two and up.

Now that the fall soccer season is over it is not too early to sign up for spring intramural soccer. Applications can be obtained at the Recreation Dept. in Village Hall or at St. Paul's.
