Five Garden City turnovers and a sputtering offense led to a Trojan defeat at the hands of the South Side Cyclones. South Side opened the scoring on an 84-yard run around left end by halfback Bryant Daniels with 9:59 left in the half. The kick was good and South Side led 7-0. But Garden City came back with a 50-yard drive that ended with a nice scoring run up the middle by Dan Flannery. Scott Gehnrich's kick was good and the score was tied at the half 7-7. Garden City's scoring drive was the result of the running of Dan Oppedisano and Flannery and the blocking of the Garden City offensive line.

With 6:20 left in the third quarter South Side scored on a 15-yard pass from quarterback Mike Ambort to wide receiver Bill Carey to put the Cyclones ahead 14-7. Following a South Side interception of a Steve DeGrazia pass the Cyclones mounted another scoring drive. The highlight of the drive was a 40-yard pass completion on a reverse that caught the Garden City defense by surprise. Then quarterback Ambort threw a 10-yard scoring pass to Carey to make the score 20-7 with 2:55 left in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter Garden City managed to make it close when with 4 seconds left in the game Steve DeGrazia hit Chris Gumiela with a touchdown pass. The kick was good. The final score was South Side 20 Garden City 14. The loss dropped the Trojan record to 4-2-1 while the South Side Cyclones boosted their record to 7-1. Come out Saturday when the Trojans try to bounce back with a win over Hewlett in a 2 p.m. home game.

This week marked a rough one for the varsity volleyball team. Garden City was blown away when, on Monday, the Trojans faced Great Neck South. The final scores were 23-30, 30-24, 27-30, and 18-30. Garden City became hopeful after they defeated Great Neck South in the second set. But Great Neck South finished the Trojans in the third and fourth set. This game indicated the team's last home game for seniors Abi Adelman, Lisa Catalano, Colleen Collins, Angel Dipietro, and Megan Jermain.

When it came time for Tuesday's game Garden City was hungry for a victory. Garden City bounced back from their defeat by surmounting MacArthur. The Trojans led MacArthur with scores of 30-25, 30-24, 27-30, and 30-15. Jamie Lardner contributed 12 kills, 10 aces and eight assists for the Trojans. Katherine Pastrana also added eight kills. After this game, the girls' confidence was strong as they would soon play Plainedge.

In spite of their confidence Garden City lost to Plainedge 26-30, 30-28, 30-19, and 30-21. Plainedge beat Garden City with their powerful kills, aggressive digs and helpful assists. This game marked the last for the team as they unfortunately left with their heads down. Though the girls should be proud as they were placed in ninth with a record of 14-5.

On Tuesday, Oct. 30, the girls' field hockey team faced Seaford in a semifinal match-up. The girls won with an outstanding score of 7-0. Brittany Barnet scored the first goal of the game early in the first half off on an assist from Crisafulli. Soon after, she added another goal for GC. Cocopardo scored two goals as well, and Gallagher, Riccio and Miller all scored one. The GC offense never let up and kept attacking goal. The Seaford goalie was kept busy and blocked 13 shots from GC. The girls' defense held up tough and only let one ball get through to Amie Roe, which was blocked. Great game girls!

On Tuesday, Oct. 30, the girls' soccer team defeated Valley Stream South (one of the top ranked teams in the division) with a final score of 2-0. Scoring for GC was Sullivan and Cerrato. Sullivan scored early in the game, putting fear in VSN. The game remained close for most of the time thanks to Tara McKennett who had seven saves in the game. With nearly 15 minutes left in the game, Cerrato scored to ensure the GC win.

After their great win against VSN, the girls faced another challenging opponent on Saturday, Nov. 3. The girls played Lynbrook in an extremely close game. Both teams defense played well; it seemed impossible for either team to score. At the end of regulation play the game was scoreless. In the end of the first overtime, GC finally managed to put one by the Lynbrook goalie. Courtney Preziosi scored to put GC up 1-0. There was another overtime to be played however. With tight defense and a strong goalie behind GC, the game remained 1-0 and GC won the game. In such a close game, every save is important. McKennett had two saves, although it might not sound as much as normal, the saves were key and she kept GC alive throughout the game.

John Di Camillo of Garden City scored as the third finisher overall and first in the 45-49 age group in the second annual Run for Their Lives Long Island Track & Field Cross Country Championship, held on Sunday, Oct. 28. Sunday, in one of their toughest games of the season, the GC Thunder football team won their eighth straight game, bringing their record to 8 wins and 0 losses. In front of another big Garden City crowd at The Stewart Avenue field, the boys defeated the Farmingdale Hawks, with a record of 6 wins 1 loss and 1 tie, 12 to 6.

The game was tied 6 to 6 at half time. Early in the second half, the Thunder defense caused and recovered a Farmingdale fumble. This provided the potent Thunder offense with the field position to drive the ball down the field for the winning touch down.

The Thunder will play their last game of the season against their toughest opponent of the season, The Elmont Cardinals. The game will be at the Stewart Avenue field this Sunday at 11 a.m.
