The Garden City Recreation Department, in cooperation with Winthrop-University Hospital, is again conducting a flu and pneumonia immunization program for senior citizens who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City.

The program will be held at the Senior Recreation Center at 6 Golf Club Lane from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4. There is no expense for this program. However, Medicare and Social Security cards should be brought with you as you will need to provide information on the applicable forms when you arrive to receive the shots.

To participate in this program, you will need to pre-register. Pre-registration will begin Wednesday, Nov. 7. You must be a resident of the Village of Garden City and 60 years or older to receive the vaccines. The Recreation Department will begin taking calls for appointments beginning at 9 a.m. Nov. 7. Call 465-4075 to make an appointment.

Adult Co-ed Volleyball begins for the season starting Thursday, Nov. 1. Men and women aged 18 and older who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City are encouraged to get involved in this recreational night. Sessions run from 7:30-9:30 p.m. every Thursday. All participants will be required to register at St. Paul's facility the first weeks of the program and residency will be checked each time someone participates. For further information, call the Recreation Department at 465-4075.

Sue Tarzian and Carrie Strum, directors of the Recreation Department's Tennis Program, are introducing another exciting tennis program for children. The Junior Ladder Match Play Program is an intramural league for children ages 10-18. It is a program geared towards children who are looking for a chance to compete in tennis but might not be ready for a travel type team.

The League will be organized by age and playing ability. Each child entered must be able to serve from the baseline, sustain a slow paced rally, keep score unassisted and have an understanding of the rules. Competitive match play will be formatted to fit the children's playing level. This program will be minimally supervised during match play. Our professional teaching staff will set up the matches.

Ladder match players will compete weekly against each other in a round robin format spread over 12 weeks. All players must be available to play on Sunday between the hours of 2-4 p.m. There will be no make-ups. The cost of this program is $130.

To register by mail or in person, make up a form listing your child's name, address, age, phone number and indicate on the sheet that you are interested in "junior ladder play." Enclose a check made out to the "Inc. Village of Garden City" and either mail or drop off the form at the main Recreation Office at 351 Stewart Avenue.

With the cooperation of Adelphi University, arrangements have been made to allow adult village residents the use of Adelphi's indoor swimming pool as part of the Recreation Department's programs. One-hour swim sessions are available at 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. every Monday through Thursday. Adult residents wishing to take advantage of this program can sign up for a one-hour session by calling the Rec Department at 465-4075 before 3 p.m. on the day they wish to swim.

Participants will be required to show proof of residency when they arrive at Adelphi and must fill out a program registration form. This program will not run during holidays or on days that Adelphi is closed. For additional information, call 465-4075.
