In the aftermath of the dastardly terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, in which Garden City suffered the greatest loss of its residents, Mayor Robert Lewis has asked the people of Garden City to "think locally" and support their community.

The American Legion Auxiliary William Bradford Turner Unit #265 joins others in the village in responding to the mayor's suggestion. The auxiliary held a luncheon and bridge recently. The president of the unit, Grace Winters, and her executive board voted to give the net proceeds from that affair to help their neighbors who have been so sorrowfully touched by this tragedy. The unit, therefore, would like to present a check in the amount of $1,000 to the Special Relief Fund to benefit the Garden City residents, especially the children, who have been affected by the recent tragedy.

With the check go our sincere condolences and prayers for all those families and friends who lost loved ones. Perhaps it will ease their pain and grief a bit to know that the people of Garden City care about their neighbors.
