Lawrence High School ended the Garden City Trojans' 14-game winning streak with a 26-13 victory in a battle of unbeaten teams. After the opening kickoff Lawrence scored on its very first play when wide receiver Chris Bone took a pitch out and ran for an 80-yard touchdown. On the following kickoff Chris Guimela dropped the ball and then picked it up and went 80 yards for a Garden City touchdown. Scott Gehnrich kicked the extra point and Garden City led 7-6 with 11:36 left in the first quarter. For the remainder of the first quarter neither team could sustain a drive as both defenses came up with big plays.

In the second quarter Lawrence quarterback Rob Blount was able to move his team down to the Garden City eight-yard line with his running and passing. Blount connected on a pretty crossing pattern to receiver Sheldon Nunn during this drive. On a fourth down and one-yard to go, on the Garden City eight-yard line, the Trojan defense held Lawrence on a run up the middle. The half ended with the score still 7-6.

Midway through the third quarter after a Garden City punt, Lawrence took the ball over at midfield and on the running of Mikeal Butler and Anthony Decatus drove the ball down to the Garden City 15-yard line. From there Butler scored Lawrence's second touchdown on a 14-yard run. Lawrence made a two-point conversion and led 14-7 with 3:33 left in the third quarter.

Then came the play that was the difference in the game. Lawrence quarterback Rob Blount was forced out of the pocket by the Garden City pass rush scrambled to his right and threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Brain Romanger. Lawrence led 20-7.

Following another Lawrence touchdown Garden City's Dan Oppedisano closed out the scoring on a six-yard run. The story of the game was the ability of the Lawrence defense to hold the Trojan's offense in check. Garden City managed only 135 yards of total offense.
