The adult recreational basketball program will begin Monday, Oct. 15 in the St. Paul's field house. These programs are for Inc. Village of Garden City residents only. All participants will be required to register upon entering St. Paul's and picture ID will be needed to enter the programs. Participants must be college-aged or older. All sessions run from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Any questions about the programs please call the Recreation Office at 465-4075.
Men's Open Basketball will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings.
Men's Over 30 Basketball will be held on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Men's Over 40 Basketball will be held on Wednesday evenings.
Women's Open Basketball will be held in Thursday evenings.
The new Garden City Community Tennis Center opened for the season Sunday, Oct. 7. As part of the indoor tennis season, the department is pleased to offer a wide range of lessons geared to children. Sue Tarzian and Carrie Strum, tennis pros, have set up a lesson program, which follows the USTA developmental guidelines and goals.
Register by mail immediately. The department cannot be responsible for delays in the mail. In-person registration for any remaining openings will be accepted beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 16.
Registration forms are available at the recreation office in Village Hall, in Cluett Hall and at the Community Tennis Center office. Residents can also make registration forms by listing their child's name, address, birth date, grade and phone number. Then list the first, second and third choice class names and codes as well as the session numbers.
Full payment must accompany the registration slip. Make all checks payable to "Inc. Village of Garden City" and mail to the Recreation Department, 351 Stewart Avenue, Garden City NY 11530. For questions regarding the instruction levels, call 483-2525. All sessions run for seven weeks. Session I begins Oct. 21; Session II begins Dec. 16; and Session III begins Feb. 24. Pee Wee Tennis - Ages 5 to 7
The Pee Wee program is used to introduce children to the basics of tennis. The equipment and size of the playing area are scaled down to a comfortable size for young children. The Ultimate Workout - Ages 12 and up
This course is for high school varsity or junior varsity level tennis players. Improve your game through an enjoyable but intense and demanding 1.5 hours of tennis drills. The Ultimate Workout will be held for seven Saturdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. beginning Saturday, March 2, and continuing to April 20. The cost of this session is $195. Please use course code UW3.

Sue Tarzian and Carrie Strum, head tennis pros at the Garden City Community Park Tennis Center, have asked the USTA to hold a free rating clinic for men and women 19 years or older who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. This will be held at the tennis facility on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 10-11 a.m. For further information or to make a reservation, call 483-2525. League play will begin May 2002. The Recreation Department will be offering adult tennis lessons at its new indoor facility. This program is open to people 18 years or older who are Garden City residents. This year's program will work as follows:
1. Select three days and times that you are available to play tennis from the list below.
2. Self rate your playing ability according to the National Tennis Rating Program listed below.
3. Submit your application to the Recreation Department by Tuesday, Oct. 23. Please indicate your name, address and phone number. Applications are also available at the Recreation Office in Village Hall. Mail the application to the Recreation Office at 251 Stewart Avenue in Garden City 11530.
Classes will then be made, grouping people of the same abilities together according to the days and times they were available. Classes will be offered according to the following schedule:
Mondays 11:30-12:30 p.m.; 7-8 p.m.; 9:30-11 p.m.
Tuesdays 1-2 p.m.; 9:30-11 p.m.
Wednesdays 10-11:30 a.m.; 9:30-11 p.m.; 10-11 p.m.

Ultimate Workout - a drill session for intermediate to advanced mobility. For those interested in a workout and increased stamina and mobility. This will be held in five-week sessions on Saturdays from 10-11:30 a.m.
The rating system is as follows:
Level 1 player - just starting to play tennis.
Level 1.5 player- has limited experience and is still working primarily on getting the ball into play.
Level 2 player - needs on court experience. Has stroke weaknesses but is familiar with basic positions in singles and doubles play.
Level 2.5 player - is learning to judge where the ball is going although overall court coverage is weak. Can sustain a short rally with players of similar ability.
Level 3 player - is fairly consistent when hitting medium paced shots, but in not comfortable with all strokes and lacks execution when trying for control, depth and power.
Level 3.5 player - has achieved stroke dependability with directional control on moderate shots but still lacks depth and variety. This player exhibits more aggressive net play, has improved court coverage and is developing teamwork in doubles play.
Level 4 player - has dependable strokes, plus the ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with some success. This player occasionally forces errors when serving. Teamwork in doubles is evident.
Level 4.5 player - has begun to master the use of power and spins and is beginning to handle pace, has sound footwork, can control depth of shots and is beginning to vary game plan according to opponents. Aggressive net play is common in doubles.
Level 5 player - has good shot anticipation and frequently has an outstanding shot or attribute around which a game may be structured. This player can regularly hit winners or force errors off of short balls and can put away volleys, can successfully execute lobs, drop shots, half volleys and overhead smashes. This player has good depth and spin on most second serves.
