Please mark your calendar and save Friday evening, Oct. 26, and plan to attend the Breeder's Cup Garden City Community Fund Family Relief Fund Benefit at the Fieldhouse on St. Paul's campus. Details for this community event will follow.

The annual observance of Fire Prevention Week in Garden City will be Oct. 7-14. All residents and friends are invited to attend the annual Inspection and Open House on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 12:30 p.m. The program will be conducted at Fire Headquarters and in the employee parking field, located on the west side of Village Hall on Stewart Avenue.

Your fire department does an outstanding job to protect our lives and homes. Please stop by to show your support. I'm sure that your entire family will enjoy the program.

The Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs, in cooperation with the Garden City School District and the Nassau County Medical Center, will again co-sponsor a free countywide flu immunization program for senior citizens.

The first immunization program for our area will be held in the Garden City High School auditorium, 170 Rockaway Avenue, on Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Residents 60 years and older who are interested in receiving the vaccine should call the school district at 294-3277, 294-3283 or 294-3043 for further information.

The Garden City Recreation Department will also co-sponsor a free immunization program for senior citizens in December at the Senior Recreation Center. Information regarding registration for this program will be given a few weeks prior to the registration.

Speeding in Garden City will not be tolerated.

A subject often addressed at Property Owners' Association meetings is resident concern over vehicular speeding within residential areas of our village and the observation that vehicles are exceeding the 30-mph village-wide limit and the 20-mph limit within school zones. I want to assure our residents that violations will not be tolerated and that police department speed enforcement will be increased.

It is most disconcerting to note that many of those who violate our speed limits are our neighbors - residents of Garden City. Please, in the interest of public safety, be mindful of the responsibility that each of us has as an operator of a motor vehicle.
