The purpose of this letter is to ask you to participate in the Community Service Weekend scheduled for Oct. 13-14 at the Garden City Bird Sanctuary. This weekend was originally scheduled over the summer but in light of the recent World Trade Center tragedy, a large number of volunteers have been calling. Volunteers and assistance from all groups and businesses are needed to help fulfill the goal of 700 hours of service during this weekend. Scheduled work hours are from noon to 5 p.m. each day, and whether your volunteers are able to donate one hour or 10, all are welcomed.
Copies of information regarding the event, a sign-up sheet for volunteers and fliers have been posted on the Village Kiosks and distributed to schools and churches. If you need further information, call 326-1720. As noted, community service comes in many forms and help can come from many sources. Please help spread the word.
Perhaps because of the recent World Trade Center tragedy, many people came to the Bird Sanctuary last Sunday for a reflective walk or to see one of the memorial trees. It was comforting to get away from the endless bad news on the TV and walk along a simple, quiet path. Many more have volunteered for the Community Service Weekend, including Chaminade High School Oct. 20 and Temple Beth Am from Merrick on Oct. 21. It has been suggested that a section of the nature refuge be landscaped as a memorial area for all that have been lost in the attack. If we can get suitable shrubs and evergreens, we will try to accommodate these requests.
Businesses and organizations can help support this event with either donations or a team of volunteers. As a certified, nonprofit organization, all donations to the Garden City Bird Sanctuary are deductible in accordance with IRS regulations. The donations will be used to purchase spring bulbs, plants, fencing, tools and to provide drinks for the volunteers. Because of the tragedy, I was unable to distribute letters directly to our business community and extend thanks to the many businesses that have donated funds to help the rescue effort. My personal thanks are extended to King's Food Store, Things & Stuff, Dougall Fraser Realty and Astoria Federal Savings, who have already made a donation to help us purchase materials for the bird sanctuary volunteers. We appreciate your support and help.
