The Village Water Department pumped an average of 9.53 million gallons of water a day for the first 10 days of August, the highest total for any 10 days since the odd/even restrictions were instituted. The peak day, so far, for the month was on Aug. 9, when we pumped 10.78 million gallons, which is our single highest day by more than one million gallons since restrictions.

A reminder to residents that the village's law with regard to water conservation (Local Law 3-1987) is now in effect. The restrictions are:

-Lawn sprinkling and garden irrigation only from April 16 to Nov. 30 of each year; only during the hours of 5 and 10 a.m. and 6 and 10 p.m.

-Persons with odd-numbered properties can water on odd-numbered days; persons with even-numbered properties can water on even-numbered days; and properties with no numbers can water on even-numbered days.

-All newly installed sprinkler systems must have moisture sensors approved by the Department of Public Works.

-All home car washing must be done with hoses fitted with spray nozzles with automatic shut-off. Use of water for washing down driveways or walkways is prohibited.

Please cooperate by observing these restrictions. The Police Department has been requested to issue appearance tickets to those persons found to be in violation of this law.

Throughout the next two to three weeks, many of our young people will be leaving for college. Some for the first time, others to conclude courses, which will lead to undergraduate and graduate degrees. My associates on the Village Board join me in wishing them a safe journey and a most productive year. We are very proud of the accomplishments of our young people and look to them as our ambassadors to the many cities, towns and villages throughout the country, which will be their temporary homes.

I have been pleased to see the fine turnout of village residents at the Recreation Department's weekly concerts on the Village Green. The department will be presenting Champagne, featuring rock and roll, rhythm and blues and a cappella, Thursday, Aug. 23.

The program, which will be held at the Garden City Gazebo, located at the corner of Hilton and Stewart Avenues, will begin at 7:15. Admission is free. Please bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a very pleasant evening. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall at the St. Paul's School. Call the Recreation Program Line at 742-5888 with questions pertaining to the concert.
