Crunch Time: School Construction Report
Residents got a district-wide school construction update during the last Board of Education meeting last week, particularly regarding the Garden City middle school and high school.
No More Freight on Hempstead Line
During a press conference appropriately held Thursday morning alongside two tracks of an old freight line in Garden City, Governor George Pataki announced the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and the New York & Atlantic Railway (NYA) finally reached an agreement ensuring the Hempstead branch be permanently closed off to freight traffic and be used only for passenger commuters.

The Garden City Centennial Soccer Club is continuing to accept applications for girl's intramural soccer for the fall season. Since the Aug. 15 deadline has passed, applications must include the $25 late fee to be eligible. Applications are available at Village Hall and at Cluett Hall. Girls living in Garden City and/or attending school in Garden City in kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible. Call Randy Colahan, girl's intramurals director, at 248-7288 with questions.
Recreation Department News
Another outstanding summer of entertainment continues at the gazebo. On Thursday, Aug. 23, the Recreation Department will present "Champagne," a group whose sounds vary from rock and roll to rhythm and blues. Concert begins at 7:15 p.m. at the Gazebo so bring a chair or a blanket and enjoy the sounds of summer!
