A reminder to residents that the village's law with regard to water conservation (Local Law 3-1987) is now in effect. The restrictions are:

-Lawn sprinkling and garden irrigation only from April 16 to Nov. 30 of each year and only during the hours of 5 and 10 a.m. and 6 and 10 p.m.

-Persons with odd numbered properties can water on odd numbered days; persons with even numbered properties can water on even numbered days; and properties with no numbers can water on even numbered days.

-All newly installed sprinkler systems must have moisture sensors approved by the Department of Public Works.

-All home car washing must be done with hoses fitted with spray nozzles with automatic shut-off. Use of water for washing down driveways or walkways is prohibited.

Please cooperate by observing these restrictions. The Police Department has been requested to issue appearance tickets to those persons found to be in violation of this law.

Our Local Law requires dog owners to leash their pets and to clean up after them when they have relieved themselves upon any areas used in common by the public. These areas include median strips, curbs, gutters, park areas, streets, etc.

Regulations require that dog waste be placed with the rubbish for curbside collection on Wednesdays and be containerized or placed in a plastic bag, which is properly secured. It must not be placed in storm drains for obvious health reasons.

Please be considerate of those village employees who are working to keep our community beautiful by cleaning up after your dog and by properly disposing of the waste.

I have been pleased to see the fine turnout of village residents at the Recreation Department's weekly concerts on the Village Green. Next week, Thursday, Aug. 9, the department will be presenting Dixieland by MCE, performing the great Dixie sounds of yesteryear.

The program, which will be held at the Garden City Gazebo, located at the corner of Hilton and Stewart Avenues, will begin at 7:15. Admission is free. Please bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a very pleasant evening. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall at the St. Paul's School. Call the Recreation Program Line at 742-5888 with questions pertaining to the concert.

The Town of Hempstead Sanitation Department will conduct its monthly S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) program Sunday, Aug. 12. The program, which is being held at various locations throughout the Town of Hempstead, will make hazardous waste facilities accessible to as many residents as possible.

Next Sunday's program will be held at the Greenfield Cemetery in Uniondale between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Under the S.T.O.P. program, residents are able to take polluting materials to the facility and have them disposed of by a registered, professional disposal company free of charge. The facility will not accept the following materials: ammunition, explosives, fireworks, infectious or medical waste, propane or oxygen tanks, radioactive materials, unlabeled materials and fire extinguishers.
