A usual ride to summer camp turned into chaos for area children when two mini school buses collided early Monday morning, July 23, at the intersection of Meadbrook and Newmarket Roads in Garden City.

Although Village police were compiling an accident report as of press time Monday, a published report said several children and the two bus drivers suffered minor injuries and one boy, suffering a serious head injury, was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

According to the published report, both buses were from Dell Transportation of Port Washington and Laidlaw Education Services in Hicksville. Dell Transportation refused to comment.

Tom McEnany, general manager of Laidlaw Education Services, said the 13 children on the Laidlaw bus were on their way to Lu-Hi Camp. "I was not at the accident scene because I went straight to the hospital when I heard of the accident," McEnany said.

"All 13 children were sent to either Nassau County Medical Center or Winthrop Hospital where they were examined and later released with minor bumps and bruises. The little boy who was airlifted was on the other bus. I believe he got some stitches in the back of his head."

Although he did not have details of the accident, Village Fire Chief Larry Nedelka said the department usually assists the police with leaking fluids that commonly spill onto the road during an accident. Garden City Police officials said a finalized report would be available later in the week.
