On Thursday, July 19, the Recreation Department will be presenting Memories of Swing, a 17-piece Big Band performing the best tunes of that era. The program, which will be held at the Garden City Village Gazebo located at the corner of Hilton and Stewart Avenues, will begin at 7:15 p.m. Admission is free. Please bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a pleasant evening. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall at the St. Paul's School. Call the Recreation Program Line at 742-5888 with questions pertaining to the concert. Working in cooperation with the Village, merchants have placed tables and chairs outside their shops and restaurants for our enjoyment. Please stop by to let the merchants know that you appreciate their efforts. I urge residents to become familiar with their local merchants and businesses and to shop in Garden City. You will be pleased with the selection, quality and commitment to customer service.

A reminder to residents that the Village's law with regard to water conservation (Local Law 3-1987) is now in effect. The restrictions are as follows:

-Lawn sprinkling and garden irrigation only from April 16 to November 30 of each year and only during the hours of 5 and 10 a.m. and 6 and 10 p.m.

-Odd numbered properties may water on odd numbered days; even numbered properties may water on even numbered days; and properties with no numbers may water on even numbered days.

-All newly installed automatic sprinkler systems must have moisture sensors approved by the Department of Public Works.

-All home car washing must be done with hoses fitted with spray nozzles with automatic shut-off. Use of water for washing down driveways or walkways is prohibited.

Please cooperate by observing these restrictions. The Police Department has been requested to issue appearance tickets to those persons found to be in violation of this law.

A number of thoughtful residents have been inconvenienced by placing plastic flats and flower pots in with their recycling box. Village personnel advise that although these items may have the recycling symbol, they are not recyclable by the Village.

The type of plastic containers that can be recycled in your recycling box are beverage, food, detergent, milk and non-toxic household cleaners. Some examples of a #1 plastic container would be soda, mouthwash, salad dressing bottles, peanut butter jars, etc. Examples of a #2 plastic container would be milk jugs, water, juice and shampoo bottles, as well as liquid detergent containers. All containers must be rinsed of all food or beverage residue.

Other plastics with the symbols "3" through "7" are to be disposed of as garbage or rubbish. Examples of non-acceptable plastics include toys, utensils, cups, plates, motor oil, plastic cans, etc.

Any questions should be referred to the Department of Public Works at 465-4003. Please observe the Village's Sanitation Guidelines by adhering to the following instructions:

1. Rubbish should be replaced at the curb Tuesday evening or early Wednesday morning.

2. Sharp objects, such as broken glass, sharp pieces of metal and knives should not be placed loosely in plastic or paper bags. Proper precaution should be taken, such as placing them in cardboard boxes tied with string or tape.
