Previous Mayor's columns have discussed the significant roles that the numerous boards and commissions play to foster and maintain the highest quality of life within our Village. This week I am focusing on the Architectural Design Review Board (ADRB) whose function is to preserve the attractiveness of residential, business and commercial buildings by providing procedures for architectural review of the exterior of the structures. Under the provisions of our Village Code, all applications for new homes and commercial and business buildings that are to be erected, reconstructed, altered or remodeled come before the ADRB. Applications for single family homes that are to be altered are sometimes referred to the board by the zoning board of appeals or the building department.
In addition, sub-division applications that are submitted to the planning commission are referred to the ADRB.
We are most grateful to the members of the ADRB who so freely share their time and expertise on the village's behalf. Robert Bridges, R.A. is chairperson of the ADRB and has served since 1976. The other members of the board are, Donald Lavin, R.A., (1987), Harry E. VanMeter, R.A., (1990) Hugh S. Lacy, P.E., (1991), Robert A. Tinnelly, P.E., (1991) Robert G. Rumsey, R.L.A., (1997) and Robert Seitz, R.A., (1999). The ADRB meets on the third Tuesday of each month in the board room at 8 p.m. except in January and February when other days are scheduled.
The Garden City Public Library has changed the time of its board meetings from 8 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The meeting date remains the second Monday of the month, unless otherwise announced.
The board also approved opening on the following Saturdays during July and August 2001; July 7, July 14, July 28, Aug. 4, Aug. 11, Aug. 18 and Aug. 25. Library Saturday hours will remain 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
As Adelphi University's 2001 academic year draws to a close, I want to acknowledge and compliment Robert A. Scott, president, on the many contributions that he and his administration have made during this past year. While Adelphi University has always been a hospitable neighbor, President Scott has made a special effort to open the Adelphi Campus to the entire Garden City Community. This has ranged from hosting an outstanding cultural lecture series to welcoming youth athletic teams onto their playing fields.
We look forward to continuing our relationship with Mr. Scott and compliment him on an outstanding year.
Our Recreation Department has done another fine job in arranging this season's Concert Series at the Village Gazebo, located on the Village Green at the corner of Stewart and Hilton Avenues.
The opening program, scheduled for Thursday, June 28, will feature Tempus Fugit-Jazz, filled with free form melodies and great solos.
The programs will begin at 7:15 and admission if free. Please bring your family, lawn chairs or blankets, a picnic dinner and enjoy a very pleasant evening. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall at St. Paul's.
Please contact the Recreation Program Line (742-5888) with questions pertaining to the concert.
