The recreation department is now accepting League Application Packages for the upcoming Men's Spring Softball League. Rosters will be accepted from the first 16 teams meeting the following eligibility requirements:

1. Businesses located within the Incorporated Village of Garden City.

2. Teams comprised of current residents of the Incorporated Village of Garden City.

3. Teams comprised of current employees of the Incorporated Village of Garden City.

The fee for this league will be $425, which covers the cost of umpires, balls, fields, and trophies. Application packages will be accepted until 4 p.m. on Friday, March 30, or until 16 valid roster packages have been accepted. Application packages may be obtained at the recreation office in Village Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

For additional information, please call the recreation office at 465-4075.

With the spring sports season rapidly approaching, the recreation department would like to remind all residents that the recreation department gives preference to the various organized village youth organizations (GCAA, Centennials, Rams, etc.), and the Garden City School District for their intramural and travel league programs.

When the fields are not in use by these youth organizations or the district, the recreation department, or a group holding a valid field permit, they are available for use by village residents.

Additionally, for reasons of safety, please do not move or relocate any soccer goals on any fields. To ensure a safe facility, goals must be fastened to the ground. Moving goals without properly securing them can lead to a dangerous condition for youngsters who are using the fields.

Playability of fields at recreation facilities will be determined solely by recreation department employees.

Several residents have inquired as to the possibility of being added to a softball team in the Men's Spring League. While the recreation department registers only full teams for this league, they will gladly assist any resident who would like to join a team in this league. Individual players who meet the current eligibility rules, but who are not affiliated with a particular team, may call the recreation office at 465-4075 and ask to be placed on the "interested players" list. If enough players join this list, a team will be formed. If there are not enough players to form a team, the list of interested players will be circulated to existing team captains at the league meeting, in hopes that interested players may be "picked up" by one or more of the teams in the league.
