Concerns Expressed About Eighth Grade State Testing Schedule
Like most school districts throughout the state, the Garden City School District has joined with others in expressing their concerns about the amount of instructional time that will be lost this spring because of the state-mandated eighth grade assessments. Superintendent of the Garden City School District Dr. Stephen Leitman addressed these concerns at a recent board of education meeting, when he spoke about what superintendents are doing to try to fight the testing schedule which will have students beginning testing in early May and continuing throughout June.
Village Groups Prepare to Fight Mall Expansion
The Village of Garden City is once again gearing up to fight against Simon Properties' application to the Town of Hempstead Board of Zoning Appeals to expand the Roosevelt Field Mall even further beyond the allowable Floor Area Ratio (FAR). The village board recently approved the hiring of a traffic and environment consultant to help the village fight the expansion at the upcoming Feb. 22 hearing at Town of Hempstead Hall.
Centennial Soccer Notes
The Garden City Centennials will be holding the first of two in-person registration nights on Tuesday, Feb. 13, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Cluett Hall in St. Paul's. The second (and last) night will be Thursday, March 1.
Recreation Department News
Welcome back to the forgotten world of the matinee. The recreation department has scheduled some of the best in family oriented films for you and your family to enjoy. These movies are shown at the Cultural Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall. The next film scheduled is The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, which will be shown during the mid-winter recess on Thursday, Feb. 22, beginning at 1 p.m. This is the feature-length live-action comedy which is based on the classic cartoons. The movie is rated "PG" and has a running time of approximately 90 minutes.
