If you've ever had the urge to try your hand (or feet) at some wild and wooly country style line dancin' and two-steppin', then this is the dance for you. The recreation department is presenting the great band "Six Gun" for your enjoyment at the annual Country Jamboree on Saturday Jan. 20. Beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall, Six Gun will perform the best and most danceable songs around. To help get you moving to the music, the recreation department will even have country line instructors to help teach those belt loop grabbin' footloose country dances.

To make the evening completely carefree, your admission price of $25 per person will also include a country chicken and rib dinner, dessert, coffee, snacks and sodas.

Advance reservations and payment are required for this very popular dance. To reserve your spot, call the recreation department at 465-4075 during business hours, no later than Thursday Jan. 18.

PLEASE NOTE: This program is designed for adults 18 years of age and older, to enjoy an evening of entertainment close to home. The recreation department respectfully request that residents not bring children to this program. Your cooperation and understanding are appreciated.

Welcome to the forgotten world of the weekend matinee. The recreation department has scheduled some of the best in family-oriented films for you and your family to enjoy. These movies are shown at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall on Sunday afternoons beginning at 2 p.m.

The next feature will be the hit comedy Chicken Run, the wild tale of a band of chickens who are trying to escape from the chicken ranch. This movie is rated "G," has a running time of approximately 82 minutes, and will be shown on Sunday, Jan. 21 beginning at 2 p.m. There is no charge for admission to the movie, and sodas and freshly popped popcorn will be on sale in Cluett Hall.

The recreation department is pleased to announce that registration for the second session of Winter Swim Lessons, held at Adelphi University Pool, is now beginning. Classes are taught by Red Cross certified instructors, and will be held in a nine-week session beginning on Saturday, Feb. 3. The classes which will be offered in this session are as follows:

* 9a.m.- Level 2- 10 children Level 3- 10 children Level 4- 10 children Level 5- 10 children

* 10 a.m.- Level 2- 10 children Level 3- 10 children Level 6- 12 children Level 7- 12 children

* 11 a.m.- Level 2- 10 children Level 3- 10 children Level 4- 10 children Level 5- 10 children

* noon- Level 2- 10 children Level 3- 10 children Level 4- 10 children Level 5- 10 children

* 1 p.m.- Level 3- 10 children Level 4- 10 children Level 6- 12 children Level 7- 12 children

The following guidelines have been established for registration: All level 2 students must be 6 years of age by the start of lessons. First time participants must provide proof of age (birth certificate) at time of registration.

Cost of the lessons is $31.50 per student, which is payable at time of registration. Registration will be done through the mail only- no phone registration.

REGISTRATION: By mail, immediately- The recreation department cannot be responsible for delays in the mail. Registration forms are available at the recreation office at village hall or you can create your own by listing your child's name, address, phone number, birth date, and first, second, or third choice of classes. In person registration will be accepted beginning Tuesday, Jan. 31. Please make checks payable to the Inc. Village of Garden City and mail to the recreation department at 351 Stewart Ave., Garden City, NY 11530.

The Garden City Dance Conservatory has announced its upcoming spring lesson season. The Conservatory is a non-recital program that is dedicated to providing the residents of the Village of Garden City with quality low-fee dance instruction in a non-competitive and positive environment. At the end of each semester, family and friends are invited to celebrate the student's personal growth at the "Demonstration Class," which is held as the last class in each semester.

The classes which will be offered are as follows:

* Hip Hop Jazz: The popular contemporary dance style is teamed up with traditional jazz dance workout, making this a fun yet physical class.

* Modern Dance: An intellectually artistic dance form that focuses on innovation of movement as well as technique, this is the mature version of Creative Dance.

* African/Modern: An exhilarating fast-paced class that uses Modern Dance technique combined with authentic African dance combinations.

* Creative Movement: The recommended place for young beginners to explore movement and imagination through dramatic play to music using the basic principles of Modern Dance.

* Creative Dance I and II: A more sophisticated version of Creative Movement that greatly expands on Modern Dance principles by furthering the use of the imagination with improvisation dancing while focusing on finer technique.

* Ballet: The classical dance form that is the ideal foundation for all dance.

* Tap: The fun and exciting American dance form, great for developing rhythm and timing.

The Recreation Chess Club has begun meeting on Saturdays in the Garden City Library meeting room from noon until 2 p.m.

Under the direction of Paul Dooher, youngsters will have a chance to learn new strategies while playing games each week. Beginners will be taught basic moves and concepts. At the end of the season, a tournament will be held, and trophies will be awarded to the top performers.

There is no charge for this program, and no registration is necessary. Youngsters in grades 3 and up are welcome to join the Chess Club.

Electronic Keyboard Lessons will be offered to Garden City residents on Wednesday evenings in the Garden City Middle School Room 107 as of Jan. 10. Lessons are held from 7:30-8:30 p.m. each week. The course will focus on reading and playing basic piano music on your electronic keyboard. The cost of this 10 week session is $35, plus a small expense for books, which will be payable directly to the instructor.

PLEASE NOTE: Students must supply their own electronic keyboards for this course. Keyboard rental will not be available. The course will begin on Jan. 10, 2001, and pre-registration is required. Registration is under way now in the recreation office in Village Hall.

The recreation department is offering a series of guitar lessons for residents on Wednesday evenings in the Garden City Middle School Room 107. Lessons began on Jan. 10, and will be held according to the following schedule:

* Beginner Guitar for Teens- 6:30-7:30 p.m.

* Guitar for Adults- 8:30-9:30 p.m.

The cost of this 10 week session is $35, plus a small expense for books and supplies, which will be payable directly to the instructor. Registration is underway now in the recreation office in Village Hall.

A gymnasium program for sixth grade students is being held at the St. Paul's Field House on weekday afternoons. This program is an extension of the popular elementary school program, and many familiar and exciting activities, such as floor hockey, dodge ball, and other gym games are offered. This program is held according to the following schedule:

* Boys- Tuesdays 3:30-5:30 p.m.

* Girls- Wednesdays 3:30- 5:30 p.m.

Programs are conducted under the direction of Rich Anderson and the recreation department staff, and are open to all sixth grade youngsters who reside in the village, regardless of what school they go to. There is no cost to participate, and no registration is necessary. PLEASE NOTE: Sneakers must be worn for all gym activities.

Due to the unexpected deflation of the Indoor Tennis Bubble, all contract time, lessons, and leagues have been suspended until repairs to the structure can be completed. Contract holders and program participants will be notified when the structure is ready to re-open. Information will also be provided in this column as the repairs proceed. The recreation department appreciates your understanding and cooperation during these unusual circumstances.
