Nov. 25 marked the second Long Island Football Championship earned by the Garden City Trojans. In front of a crowd of 6000 at Hofstra stadium, the boys achieved a win over the North Babylon Bulldogs. Garden City's last win in the Championships was in '93 against West Islip when the team won 14-9. On Saturday, the boys upset the Bulldogs and won with a final score of 20-13.

The Trojans celebrate their win in the Long Island Championship Game, held at Hofstra stadium last Saturday.

The first quarter was marred by sloppy play and turnovers by both teams. At the end of the first half alone, there was a total of seven fumbles. GC had the opportunity to score early in the second quarter, but was stopped by North Babylon on a 4th down and 2 yards to go. North Babylon then moved the ball up field with a powerful running attack and scored the first touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run by Bob Alpi with 5:46 left in the first half. Garden City then came back to tie the score on a 53-yard pass from Dave Kang to Tom Garvey. Garvey then kicked the extra point to make the score 7-7. The half ended with Garden City stopping a North Babylon drive with tough defense by Dan Oppedisano, rushing the passer enabling Brendan Flanagan to come up with the interception.

In the third quarter, GC came out with a strong running attack. Dave Kang made a big 38-yard run to set up a 2-yard touchdown run for Bill Hannan. The kick was good and the score was then 14-7. At this point, the GC defense took control of the game. Lineman Marc Oppedisano, Mike Cirrito, and Scott Owen, and linebackers Brendan Flanagan, and Dan Oppedisano played outstanding defense for the Trojans.

In the fourth quarter, the score started off with GC up, 14-7. Garden City took over the ball in North Babylon territory at the 39-yard line. After moving the ball on the ground, Kang completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Bill Hannan in the left flat on a 3rd and 10 play to give GC a 20-7 lead with 6:57 left in the game. After the kickoff, North Babylon proceeded to march 46-yards to the Garden City 20-yard line. On a pass attempt by the Bulldog's quarterback Shawn Fehn, Trojan linebacker Steve Smith made a big interception. Garden City tried unsuccessfully to run out the clock but turned over the ball to North Babylon on their own 18-yard line with less than two minutes remaining. With 49 seconds left in the game, the Bulldogs came up with a huge touchdown on a hook and ladder play making the score 20-13. Marc Oppedisano then blocked the extra point attempt and GC claimed their victory as Kang ran out the clock by taking a knee on the next two plays.

Bill Hannan and Dave Kang led the Trojans to victory. Bill Hannan finished the game with 54-yards on 12 carries. Kang, the MVP of the game, completed 7 of 9 passes for 111 yards and rushed for 113 yards on 18 carries. Congratulations to the boys on an undefeated 11-0 record and a Long Island Championship.
