On Saturday, Sept. 16, the Garden City Trojans played the Carey Seahawks. The Trojans sunk the Seahawks with a final score of 20-12.

Garden City broke the ice when Dave Kang scored the first touchdown with 8:58 left to go in the first quarter. Then Bill Hannan scored the second touchdown for GC after only a few plays. The offensive line was dominating the Carey defense. The first quarter ended with a score of 13-0.

In the second quarter, Hannan had his second touchdown of the game. There was an injury on the play, however, and Bill Breuer was taken out due to a pain in his left ankle. Carey's Lou Susino scored an amazing touchdown when he recovered the ball on a GC fumble, changing the momentum of the game. The first half ended, with Carey now up on the board, with a score of 20-6.

Throughout the third quarter, Carey was struggling to catch up with Garden City. The score remained the same until the fourth quarter when Carey had a 16-yard touchdown pass. Dan Oppedisano made an excellent block of the Carey attempted extra point. The score remained the same and the game ended in a successful victory for the Trojans; the scoreboard read GC 20, Carey 12.

The story of the game was the great offensive line, the running of Hannan and Dan Oppedisano, and a stingy Garden City defense. This year's team will have a blend of returning veterans led by Mark Oppedisano, an All-Conference guard, and some newcomers. The offensive line returns Oppedisano, Owen, O'Brien, and Gallucci with newcomer Breuer starting at center. However, Coach Tom Flatley will greatly miss running back John Maloney. Coach Flatley states, "no one can fit Maloney's shoes." Garden City also lost receiver Dan Doherty and has confidence that Tom Garvey will be a successful replacement. Other returning players that Flatley is counting on are Charlie Manning, Mike Miller, and Mike Cirrito. The way the team was playing on Saturday showed that they might have a chance for the Conference Championship. Come and support the team on Saturday, Sept. 23 at Hewlett at 2 p.m.
