During the past year, residents have observed improvements being made to both the Nassau Boulevard and Stewart Manor Railroad Station facilities. The work is being done by the MTA Long Island Rail Road under New York State funding made possible by Senator Kemp Hannon.

I was advised this morning by the acting president of the Long Island Rail Road, Kenneth J. Bauer, that the railroad is ready to begin site work at the Garden City Station.

The Long Island Rail Road has worked closely with the Village in developing its plan for this project. Its scope includes construction and repair of sidewalks, installation of curbing and brick pavers around the station building and restoration of the shelter building on the south side of the tracks.

We have been assured that there will be no interruption to train service and advised that the projects will be completed by the fall of 2001 with the installation of landscaping.

The Village will continue to work with the Long Island Rail Road to see that inconveniences to those who use this facility are kept to a minimal level.

This past week's heavy rainfall and the potential for accumulations of storm water increases the breeding area for mosquitoes.

As previously discussed in this column, the Nassau County Health Department advises that the key to controlling mosquitoes is to remove the standing water in which they breed before they become flying, biting adults. The Health Department recommends that we immediately take the following preventative steps.

* Remove or empty standing water from old tires, garbage cans, pails, children's toys or any object that can hold water.

* Keep swimming pools chlorinated and their covers free of stagnant water.

* Clean and unclog rain gutters to keep them draining properly

* Change the water in bird baths every two or three days

* Install window and door screens and keep them in good repair

* Avoid using bug zappers since they also kill beneficial insects

* Replace outdoor lights with yellow "bug" lights

* Avoid mosquito populated areas if possible

* Join your local Fight the Bite community cleanup activities

* Report mosquito complaints or dead birds to

I have been pleased to see the fine turnout of Village residents at the Recreation Department's weekly concerts on the Village Green.

This Thursday, Aug. 10, the Recreation Department will be presenting Blue Angel - High featuring their energized top 40 review.

The program, which will be held at the Garden City Gazebo, located at the corner of Hilton and Stewart Avenues, will begin at 7:15 and admission is free. Please bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a very pleasant evening. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall at the St. Paul's School. Please contact the Recreation Program Line (742-5888) with questions pertaining to the concert.
