On what appeared to be a possible rainy night, numerous Garden City residents and nearby neighbors piled onto the lawn by the gazebo to celebrate the start of the recreation department's summer concert series on Thursday, June 29.
The corner joining Hilton and Stewart Avenues flooded with cars as families and friends gathered on Village Green to lay out their blankets and chairs to enjoy the show.
The revelry began with the band "The Blue Saracens," a live swing band which entertained the vast audience until about 9:30 p.m. The band performed a variety of swing and jazz tunes, ranging from vocal pieces like "Night and Day" to instrumental selections featuring trumpet, keyboard, and upright bass solos.
Children gathered all around the gazebo grounds, playing frisbee, throwing a ball around, or just chasing each other while parents looked on. Some kids took advantage of the band playing to take time out to dance with their grandparents. There was even a popcorn vendor on the premises so audience members could enjoy a snack.
The audience clearly enjoyed the performance, as many visitors stayed and listened on until the band was finished. Despite rumors and threats of rain showers, the opening of the summer concert series truly turned out to be a success, with a beautiful evening and great music for all in attendance.
