The Recreation Department Summer Concert Series will begin this Thursday, July 29 at 7:15 p.m. with a performance by The Blue Saracens. Enjoy the best of the new style Swing and Jump tunes, as performed by one of New York's hottest new bands.

The Summer Concerts are held at the Gazebo on Village Green, which is located at the corner of Hilton and Stewart Avenues. Admission to the concerts is free of charge to all residents. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy the great music under the beautiful summer sky. In the event of rain, shows are held indoors at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall at St. Paul's School. Due to space limitations at Cluett Hall, proof of Garden City residency is required for all shows moved indoors.

The Recreation Department is holding a trip to Splish Splash Waterpark in Riverhead for all middle and high school age students on Monday July 10. Buses will depart from the parking lot at Saint Paul's School (by Cluett Hall) at 9 a.m. and will return there at approximately 5 p.m.

Supervision for this trip will be provided by playground and recreation department staffs. The cost of the trip will be $16 per person, which will include unlimited rides at Splish Splash and the bus ride. Registration is now underway at the recreation office in village hall. This trip is limited to a maximum of 100 students, and registration will be taken on a first-come first-serve basis. Payment for this trip will be accepted in cash only, no checks please.

The Recreation Department is pleased to again offer the Wilson "Mr. Pee Wee" Tennis Program to Garden City residents. This fun-filled program is designed to introduce young children ages 4-8 to the game of tennis in a full and rewarding way. The equipment and size of the playing area is tailored down to a comfortable level for children. Classes run for 45 minutes Monday through Friday at 9 and 10 a.m. and noon. Class size is limited to eight children per class. There is a fee of $20 per child for these "Mr. Pee Wee" lessons, which includes a T-shirt and cap for each child who participates. Registration will be held during the week of June 19 at each of the five playgrounds, between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon. Classes will be held at each of the five playgrounds according to the following schedule:

In addition to the "Mr. Pee Wee" program, beginner lessons for children 9 years of age and older will also be held in the five village playgrounds. These lessons concentrate on fundamental stroke techniques and basics of the game. Classes run for 45 minutes, beginning at noon. There is a fee of $15 per child for these beginner classes.

Students must supply their own racquets. Classes will be held at the five playgrounds according to the following schedule:

Session I: August 7-11

Session II: August 14-17

This camp will be under the direction of Patricia Leonenko, who has been the director of this program for the past several years. Children will participate in activities such as craftwork, science, and music.

The cost of this camp will be $75 per child, per session. A birth certificate must be presented at the first class for each child registered. Due to the popular nature of this program, combined with the limited number of openings, requests for children who are not in the appropriate age range cannot be considered.

The Recreation Department will again conduct a Youth Soccer Camp for boys and girls ages 6 through 12, who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. This camp will be held at the Community Park Fields, in two one-week sessions, July 31 through August 4 and August 7 through August 11. Youngsters must be entering first grade in September 2000. Proof of age will be required.

This program will be offered in either half-day (two hour) or full day (five hour) sessions, and children may attend for either one week or two weeks. The two-hour session will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m., at a cost of $50 for one week or $100 for two weeks. The two-hour session concentrates on individual skill development. The five hour session will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at a cost of $100 for one week or $200 for two weeks. The five-hour session includes an hour lunch and swim session which is supervised by the Soccer Camp staff, and will include full field games after lunch.

This program is in its 22nd year of operation, and is under the direct supervision of Paul LeSueur, who has had extensive experience as a player, coach, teacher and administrator.

Youngsters will be placed in age appropriate groups, with the instructor/camper ratio not to exceed 1-10. Safe playing techniques and team cooperation will also be stressed. Each participant will receive a T-shirt and certificate of completion at the end of the camp.

The Recreation Department will again offer a Boys' Lacrosse Camp for boys in grades 3-6 who are residents of the village. This camp will be held at the Saint Paul's athletic fields, and will be under the direction of Bob Defliese and Wally Cook, of the Garden City Schools. This camp will be offered in two one-week sessions during the weeks of July 3 to 6, and July 10 to 13. Youngsters may choose to attend either one or both of the sessions.

This camp will teach boys the basic techniques of catching, throwing and scooping and will then move on to drills and rules of the game. At the end of each week, the boys will play intergroup games on a modified lacrosse field. All necessary equipment will be provided, and no previous experience is needed. All youngsters will receive a T-shirt and certificate of completion at the conclusion of the camp.

The Recreation Department will again offer a Summer Baseball Camp for boys and girls ages 6 to 13, who are residents of the Incorporated Village of Garden City. This camp will be held at the Community Park Fields. This camp will be offered in two, one-week sessions, which will be held according to the following schedule:

Session I July 17-20

Session II July 24-27

Youngsters ages 6 to 8 will attend from 8:30-10:30 a.m.

Youngsters ages 9-13 will attend from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The camp will focus on individual skill development, and on the importance of playing together as a team.

Cost of this camp will be $50 per child, per one-week session, and will include a T-shirt and a certificate of completion at the conclusion of the camp. A birth certificate must be presented at the first class for each child registered. Due to the popular nature of this program, combined with the limited number of openings, requests for children who are not in the appropriate age range cannot be considered. There is a limit of 50 participants in each session.

REGISTRATION: By mail, immediately- the recreation department cannot be responsible for delays of the mail. In-person registration began on Monday, June 5. Please make checks payable to Inc. Village of Garden City, and mail to Recreation Department, 351 Stewart Ave., Garden City, NY 11530.

Once again, the recreation department will offer a selection of Youth Sports Camps for residents this coming summer. Held at Community Park and St. Paul's, these camps provide an enjoyable, instructional experience for village youngsters.

Registration for these camps will be done primarily through the mail, with registration for each camp beginning when the camp is announced in the newspaper, and fliers distributed through the schools. In-person registration will only be accepted after the dates indicated for each camp in the news release and on the fliers.

Additional camp announcements will be made as dates and staffs are confirmed with the recreation department.

The recreation department will again conduct a youth basketball camp for boys and girls in grades 3 to 6. This camp will be held at the St. Paul's Field House, and will be under the direction of Tom Gleeson, former basketball coach at the Merchant Marine Academy.

The instructional camp for boys and girls entering grades 3 and 4 in September 2000 will be held from 8:30 to 11 a.m., and the camp for boys and girls entering grades 5 and 6 will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There will be a limit of 40 children per session.

The purpose of this program is to provide instruction in self-improvement, basketball fundamentals, team play, group cooperation, and fun. The cost of this camp will be $50 per child, which includes a T-shirt and a certificate of completion at the end of camp.

Each participant should dress in shorts, T-shirt, and sneakers, and should bring a towel with them to the camp.
