I have followed the Garden City High School's 2000 spring sports schedule with interest and at its conclusion, compliment the high level of performance that our athletes and coaches have once again achieved.

Special congratulations are due to the Girls Varsity Lacrosse team, the Boys Varsity Baseball team, the Boys Varsity Lacrosse team and the Boys Doubles Tennis team on their recent victories and for bringing home the New York State Championship. Congratulations to the Girls Varsity Softball team and the Girls Varsity Track team on winning the Nassau County championship. Each member of these teams, and their coaches are to be recognized for their outstanding achievement, and complimented for the positive recognition that they have brought to the Village of Garden City.

Sunday, June 25, marks the graduation of the Garden City High School Class of 2000. My colleagues on the Village Board of Trustees and I join all of the residents of our village in extending congratulations to these outstanding young people. They have been a credit to our community during their years at the high school and will continue to reflect well on Garden City as our ambassadors in their homes away from home during their college years.

We wish the Class of 2000 the very best and congratulate them on their many accomplishments and contributions. We urge them to keep learning, keep listening and to seek knowledge so that they can make a difference.

The Long Island Rail Road crossing at Franklin Avenue will be closed on Wednesday, June 21. The crossing will be closed from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. This will create a great deal of disruption as both northbound and southbound traffic on Franklin Avenue will have to be diverted. Please plan accordingly and give yourself additional time to get into the Garden City Rail Road Station and the Central Business District. Last Saturday marked the opening of the Garden City swimming pool for its 43rd season. I understand that it was a great success! Any questions with regard to application forms/procedures, etc. should be directed to the recreation department at 465-4075, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Recreation Department has done another fine job in arranging this season's Concert Series at the Village Gazebo, located on the Village Green at the corner of Stewart and Hilton Avenues.

The opening program, scheduled for Thursday, June 29, will feature The Blue Saracens - the newest style of swing music.

The programs will begin at 7:15 p.m. and admission is free. Please bring your family, lawn chairs or blankets, a picnic dinner and enjoy a very pleasant evening. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall at St. Paul's.

Please contact the Recreation Program line (742-5888) with questions pertaining to the concert.
