During the Easter school recess, the boys high school varsity lacrosse team traveled to Colorado to play four of that area's top teams. The boys did exceptionally well on the playing field in winning all the games, but their exemplary behavior off the field is the subject of this letter.
When the boys were not playing, "Doc" Dougherty had the team uniformly attired in golf shirts monogrammed with Garden City Lacrosse, so everywhere they traveled they were conspicuous - their behavior was exceptional. The three coaches, i.e., "Doc", Doug Dwyer and John Scorcia, received continual compliments from strangers at restaurants, Coors Field and at the hotel, and from the coaches, staff and cadets at the Air Force Academy, and the Denver University personnel.
The team not only enhanced the national athletic reputation of Garden City High School, but also the character of its community.
Too frequently people write to complain - too infrequently, to compliment. The boys, team managers, and coaches are to be congratulated as a credit not just to themselves and the school, but to their families and the village.
