The Garden City boy's lacrosse team has started off another spectacular season with convincing victories over the highly competitive Lynbrook, Chaminade and Manhasset teams.

Garden City's team is led this year by all-star athletes- seniors: Defenseman Mickey Blum; Goalie Ryan Gillin; Defenseman, Midfielder Ryan Cappilupi; Midfielder Dave Duffy; and juniors: Attackman Peter LeSueur and Defenseman Tom Garvey.

In the team's 9-8 victory over rival Manhasset on April 1, at the Wood Stick Classic, the Trojans did everything except disappoint the fans. This heart-stopping game came down to the wire.

Trailing for most of the game, the Trojans came on with intensity. Their passes were crisp, their shots accurate and defense unbeatable.

After scoring three unanswered goals, Garden City had tied the game at 8. With two minutes left, the Trojans took advantage of a defensive lapse by Manhasset, and put the winning goal in. On a pass from Pete LeSueur, Mike Wenzel fired a shot past the Manhasset goalie.

The next face-off was crucial. As he had been doing for the fourth quarter, Ryan Cappilupi won the face-off, sending the ball toward Jared Keating. Quickly collecting the ball, Keating ran into the restraining box and dished it off to LeSueur. On a play designed the week before, the Trojans stalled. For the next minute and 42 seconds, Garden City ran circles around the Manhasset players, leaving them nothing but dizzy.

After four victories under its belt, three against highly ranked teams, one can only wonder if this team is going to bring Garden City its fourth State Championship.

For those wishing to see a game, the Trojans are playing home on Monday, against Plainview JFK and on Wednesday, against Mepham. Both these games will begin at 4:15 p.m.
