On Sunday, Jan. 9 the Recreation Department will present Family Fun Day from 1 to 3 p.m. at St. Paul's Field House. This program is designed for parents and children (ages 6 to 10 please) to enjoy an afternoon of gym activities together.

There will be relay races, circle games, dodge ball, and other activities. To help cool everyone off, cold drinks will be available during the program at a nominal charge. There is no charge for this program, but advanced registration is required. To register, call 465-4075 no later than Jan. 7.

The Recreation Department is offering electronic keyboard lessons for middle and high school age and older residents on Thursday evenings beginning Jan. 13. These lessons will be held in the Garden City Middle School, room 107, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. This course will focus on reading music and playing basic piano music on an electronic keyboard.

The cost of this 10-week course is $30 plus a small expense for books. This class is contingent upon a minimum registration of eight participants, Registration has begun.

The Recreation Department is offering a beginner guitar class for adult residents on Thursday evenings beginning Jan. 13. These lessons will be held in the middle school, room 107, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. This course will focus on reading and playing basic guitar.

Although this is the time of year when most folks are busy preparing for the upcoming holiday season, it's not too early to start planning for a summer job with the Garden City Recreation Department.

Challenging, enjoyable positions are available at the Garden City pool, the village playgrounds in our summer sports camps and in the recreation maintenance division.

Reminder: Even if you were employed by the Recreation Department last year, including the pool, you are still required to re-apply and be interviewed for the upcoming summer.

Interviews will be conducted on the following dates:

Tuesday, Dec. 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

No interviews will be conducted without an appointment, and positions will not be offered to applicants who do not interview.

To schedule an interview appointment, please call the Recreation Office at 465-4075 Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Walt Disney's World on Ice is presenting the hit Toy Story at the Nassau Coliseum and the Recreation Department has discount tickets to the Thursday, Jan. 20 show for 7 p.m.

These tickets are normally $22.75, but are available to residents for just $19.75. These tickets are obtained on consignment from the Nassau Coliseum and must be paid for in cash only. The last day of sale for these tickets will be Jan. 10.

Because of a scheduling conflict between the Coliseum and the Meadowlands Arena, there will be no Saturday morning performance of this show.

A Mixed Doubles Tennis Party will be held on Saturday, Jan. 15 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. For a fee of just $30 per couple, enjoy tennis time, refreshments and snacks. Games are Round Robin just-for-fun format. To sign up, contact Steve Epsey at Community Park at 483-2525.

Early registration for the 2000 season has come to an end. All applications received now will be subject to a late registration fee. Because of the team registration deadlines issued by the Nassau County PAL, no applications will be accepted after Feb. 1.

Applications are available at the Garden City Recreation Department or at Olympic Den, 676 Dogwood Avenue in Franklin Square (486-0975). NCPAL requires that proof of age be provided. Please make sure that a copy of the child's birth certificate be provided with the application. Cost of the program includes uniforms for each player. Gardes 3 to 6 cost $75 and grades 7 and 8 cost $92 (not including the late fee). The fee includes United States Lacrosse Membership.

Participation in the GC Rams Lacrosse program is open to all girls in the third through eighth grade who reside or who attend school in Garden City. The program is also open to neighboring villages that do not have a PAL sponsored girls lacrosse program. Parents are reminded that the GC Rams Girls Lacrosse is a travel program. General practices for the outdoor program starts March 1. Games start on Saturday, April 1 and end on or about June 4.

The indoor program begins on Sunday, Jan. 9 and ends on March 5. All indoor sessions are held in the St. Paul's Field House. The schedule is as follows: Grades 3 to 4 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.; Grades 5 to 6 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.; and Grades 7 to 8 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Girls must wear sneakers and provide their own lacrosse stick and mouth guard. Mouth guards are required during all lacrosse practices and games. Should you have any questions about the program or wish to volunteer, contact Gary O'Connor at 248-3898.

Boys Indoor Lacrosse winter session will begin Jan. 8 at the St. Paul's Field House on the schedule listed below and under the supervision of the following grade coordinators for all registered players:

* Bob Engelke (248-3690) -- 3rd grade from 4 to 5 p.m.

* Leon McCullough (354-0915) -- 4th grade from 5 to 6 p.m.

* Joe Pando (877-9556) -- 5th grade from 6 to 9 p.m.

* Dave Leistman (742-2093) -- 6th grade from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

* John Appelt (741-1691) -- 7th and 8th grade from 9 to 10:30 p.m.

All players must wear full equipment and sneakers indoors.

The second grade clinic begins Sunday, April 2 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. outdoors at St. Paul's.

Registration will continue through the month of January at Olympic Den at 676 Dogwood Avenue in Franklin Square on Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dogwood Avenue runs west off Nassau Boulevard, just south of Hempstead Turnpike and the phone number is 486-0975.

Participation is open to all boys in second through eighth grade who reside in Garden City or attend school in Garden City and who do not play middle school lacrosse.

The registration fee is $60 per player. There will be an additional fee of $25 for late registering in January after the indoor workouts have started. Registration will close on Feb. 1. Players who have previously played and who wish to order a new jersey may do so at the time of registration at a cost of $20, but must reorder their existing jersey number to avoid duplication of a number.

First year players other than second graders must order a jersey at a cost of $20. Jerseys will be provided to players in the second grade clinic as part of the registration fee. Garden City Lacrosse shorts may be ordered by any player at the time of registration for a cost of $20 per pair.

To register, bring a check payable to Garden City Rams Lacrosse in the amount required for registration, jersey, and shorts as needed. No cash will be accepted. A canceled check will serve as the receipt. A copy of the child's birth certificate will be necessary too.

The Garden City High School's Women's Fencing Team defeated Jericho high School. Genevieve Peeples, Emily Harper, Elizabeth Oliver and Christine Livoti are pleased with their recent victory.

Also, the men's team beat Jericho 14-4. Both the men's epee and foil teams comprised of Ryan Wangner, Elizabeth Kriedman, Tim Cha, Paul Livanos, Joe Causarano, and Chris Torino were exceptional.

The men's team repeated their performance against Great Neck North with a 17-1 victory. The girls team lost to Great Neck North's women's team.

Both teams are busy practicing in the high school cafeteria for their upcoming matches.

The GCHS Boys Swimming Team recently defeated both Massapequa and Framingdale in a tri-team format. The pre-season ranking put Garden City behind Great Neck North and Long Beach in the number three spot. According to Coach Anne Sullivan, "Our boys are going to surprise many coaches. The versatility of our swimmers will make up for the presumed lack of speed in the sprinting events. Our girls varsity team has proven that to eveyone," point to the reigning county champions to explain her optimism.

Young swimmers who joined the team this year from the middle school passed a series of stringent physical fitness tests, to provide depth, and the addition of new diver Kevin Albano, is a promising new freshman teammate. This year's roster is led by seniors Ian Murphy and David Bliss. Juniors John Dionisio, Tom Donovan, Brian Hertler, Steve Morelli, underclassmen Bryan Pflug, Mike Eng, Matt Tamke, Matt Bliss and Mark Matteini will provide points and versatility. Matt Finnerty, Tom Bowden and Trevor Stanco from the middle school round out the very young team.

The team took first place in all 11 events. a confident and stronger Ian Murphy put up quite a diving show. Dave Bliss, Brian Hertler, Steve Morelli, Bryan Pflug and Matt Bliss were all first place finishers.

The final scores were Garden City 61, Farmingdale 38 and Massapequa 37.

The Boy's sixth grade CYO team won against Elmont with a score of 57-42. The St. Anne's Stanners remain undefeated after winning their fourth consecutive game. St. Boniface of Elmont lost one week before this game to St. Anne's.

James Tuomey, Matt Petition and John Cordio took a 26-18 lead into half time for St. Anne's. St. Boniface had a come-back in the third quarter with a score of 37-36 in favor of Elmont. The final period score was 20-6 for St. Anne's.

St. Anne's was led by Tuomey (18 points) and Petition (14 points). Dillon Dwyer, Peter Ungberg and Tim Prisco provided steady ball-handling, while Brian Leistman, Corey Garvey and Travis Wyche forced numerous turnovers with speed and defense. Dwyer finished with 8 points, while Wyche chipped in with 5 points.
