By way of an update, the Village initiated chlorination of its water system on Oct. 26, following the determination that a positive bacteriological sample was found during testing. Following directives of the Nassau County Department of Health, the Village maintained chlorine levels of 1.5 mg/l at all of its operating sources.

I am pleased to report that no unsatisfactory bacteriological samples have been collected in the distribution system since Oct. 25 and that the Village has been authorized to reduce the chlorine feed, so that a minimum chlorine residual of 0.1 mg/l can be detected at all locations within the distribution system.

The Village will continue to work closely with the Health Department in an effort to eliminate all chlorination, however, that step will dramatically improve the taste of our water.

The Colonel Aaron Ogden Chapter, NSDAR had asked that Tuesday, Dec. 14 be declared as a bicentennial tribute to George Washington on the 200th anniversary of his death. A Bicentennial Tribute will be displayed at the Garden City Public Library, along with the signed proclamation during the month of February.

Once again, homes in Garden City are decorated with wreaths and garlands, reflecting the holiday season. Our Police and Fire Departments are urging homeowners to take particular care in the decorating so as not to impair the visibility of their house numbers.

A properly displayed house numeral will save precious minutes when our emergency services are responding to your home. Please cooperate and help us to help you.

I would like to advise that the leaf removal program is completed this year. Please do not place additional leaves in the street. The Department of Public Works is now in the process of converting equipment to be ready for ice and snow removal. Thank you for your cooperation.

With the holiday season upon us, the Police Department is intensifying business area patrols to prevent criminal activity. Residents should be aware that this season, with its increased and sometimes hectic activity, is a time to take extra precautions to protect ourselves and our property, as there are always individuals looking for an opportunity to profit through a criminal act.

Your Police Department is here to serve you, please do not hesitate to call them for any suspicious activity.
