Kerri Flynn of Manhasset, representing the Nassau Country Club and Allan Van Nostrand, the director of tennis at the Cherry Valley Club in Garden City are the new Long Island Mixed Doubles Champions. They defeated Kate Schneider of Glen Cove, also from Nassau Country Club and her partner, Tim Mangan, of Bayville, director of Racquet Sports at the Nassau Country Club, by scores of 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.

Also winners in this year's competition were The Family and Children's Association and Rotacare, a medical outreach sponsored by the Rotary Clubs. These two fine charities will each be presented with a check from the Long Island Platform Tennis Association which conducted this tournament, for the proceeds of the entry fees from the competitors. Last year $6,000 was donated to the two charities and it is anticipated that that amount will be surpassed with the proceeds of this year's event. Enabling the association to make this contribution were three fine sponsors, Banfi Vintners of Old Brookville, Blackford Securities of Garden City and Daniel Gale Realtors of Huntington.

After the first set, it looked like the Flynn/Van Nostrand team was unstoppable, as Kerri Flynn played some awesome points off the screens and wherever the ball was hit. Mangan and Schneider looked beat, but as so often happens in "paddle," the momentum changed in the second set. Mangan came alive with drives that were missing in the opening set, now on target.

The deciding set wavered back and forth with each side seemingly ready to take charge but neither did. The result - a tie breaker. Van Nostrand/Flynn, after losing the first point, ran off a string of five winners, one being a serving fault by their opponents, and won, 7-4. It was an exciting conclusion to a weekend of strong competition.

In the semi-finals, the new champions upset the defending champions, Sharon Hummers of Garden City and Alan Rudman of Syosset while Schneider/Mangan turned back John and Tara Schmitt of Garden City.

The Consolation winners were Beth Haggerty of Locust Valley and Andy Borzilleri of Garden City. In the Championship Reprieve Gloria Grafer of Port Washington and Alex Voiz of Locust Valley won, while in the Consolation Reprieve Pam Doyle of Huntington and Steven Flynn of Manhasset took home the prize.

The tournament also had a "B" section, in which Jacqueline Eaton and Tom Cullen, both from Manhasset, defeated Paul and Jeanne Callahan of Garden City for first place. The Consolation was won by Scott and Denise Eilbeck of Garden City and the Championship Reprieve was taken by Kevin and Eleanor Carsey, also from Garden City. Mark and Ellen Ginsberg of Sands Point were victorious in the Consolation Reprieve.
