Quinnipiac sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Mathers (Garden City High School) was selected as the NCAA Division I Northeast Conference Field Hockey Player of the Year in a vote of the league's head coaches.
Mathers had an outstanding season in goal for Quinnipiac.
She was one of only two players to claim NEC Player of the Week honors twice this season. Mathers' solid work in net also enabled Quinnipiac to lead the NEC in team goals against average.
Mathers led Quinnipiac to its first-ever NEC championship, posting a league-high, five shutouts with an overall 2.07 goals against average and an 81.2 percent save percentage.
In league play, Mathers was even better, recording a minuscule .63 goals against average.
Mathers was also honored with "All-Conference First Team" accolades.
Quinnipiac, under the direction of Head Coach Becca Main Kohli, finished the 1999 season with a final 10-9 record, its first winning campaign in five years as a varsity program and its second year as a NCAA Division I team.
While at Garden City High School, Mathers was asked to "fill in" for a few games as goalkeeper by Coaches Diane Chapman and Linda Norton. She went to the New York State Field Hockey Championships in 1994, '95, '96 and '97, and was a member of the first-ever State Championship Team in 1995. She was a high school Regional All-American Honoree in 1997.
