Thanks Garden City Rotary for the privilege to tell you about Project Literacy. You understand the importance of making a stronger and better community by teaching people illiteracy skills they need for a full and satisfying life. We think of you as partners.
Project Literacy is an innovative grassroots response to the national problem of literacy. Project Literacy, launched in 1986, recruits and trains volunteers to deliver a multisensory strategy that helps people with lifelong difficulties learn to read. All services are free.
Current research indicates that a lack of phonemic awareness appears to be a major obstacle to learning to read and that individuals with reading disabilities must be provided highly structured programs that directly teach application of phonologic rules to the decoding of print. Project Literacy recognizes that these principles of reading instruction are effective for all learners and are critical for learners with reading disabilities.
For a satisfying volunteer experience, or to get help for someone who wants to improve reading, writing and spelling, call 676-7066 or 679-3522. Give the gift of literacy and change a person's life.
