In the Village's new pavilion, located on the corner of Stewart and Franklin Avenues next to Gross Jeweler's, Mayor Hal Hecken will officially cut the ribbon to celebrate the Franklin Avenue Beautification Project's completion on Friday, Oct. 15. The Village trustees will be on hand to join the mayor in the ceremony and the Chamber of Commerce has worked to turn this ribbon cutting into a major Village event from noon to 2 p.m. with entertainment and lunch. The celebration has been scheduled for the day before the 21st Annual Homecoming and Chamber of Commerce Street Fair to help kick-off an entire weekend of celebrating the Village's rich history and its future.
Franklin Avenue merchants and office tenants will join Village officials and residents at The Pavilion to listen to Village Music Makers' Tom Cats and to watch the antics of street entertainers. Restaurants have been invited to provide food outside their establishments and merchants have also been invited to put out displays for interested shoppers. This is a prelude to the following day's sidewalk sales.
The Street Fair, which begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16 on Seventh Street, is scheduled by the Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Garden City High School's Homecoming Day Parade. Restaurants and shops will have displays all along Seventh Street and Franklin Avenue south of Seventh Street. Seventh Street will be closed to vehicles from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Businesses located north of Seventh Street and community organizations will also be able to display along the fair site.
The Garden City High School Homecoming Day Parade begins at 12:15 p.m. on Seventh Street and makes its way back to the high school in time for the Homecoming Football Game. The Boys Varsity Football Team will play Seaford at 2 p.m. Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity Soccer will have just returned from their 10 a.m. games at Oceanside. The Boys and Girls Cross-Country Teams will be away during Homecoming.
