With cooler temperatures expected, trees will be planted along the east side of Franklin Avenue, between Eleventh Street and Stewart Avenue this week. As the trees are being planted, other crews will be installing the underground utilities along the west side of Franklin Avenue in preparation for the installation of pavers, street light poles and street furniture.

Subject to weather conditions and the installation of the cross walk at Franklin Avenue, Guy Pratt, Inc. will be milling Seventh Street between Franklin Avenue and Hilton Avenue in preparation for it being resurfaced. The contractors and the Village will work with the businesses and residents to mitigate problems and expedite the paving process.

Plans call for a separate contractor to return and replace the three painted crosswalks with brick pavers. This should be done by mid-October.

A school crossing guard position is being offered by the Garden City Police Department. The salary being offered is $29 per day. For further information, interested parties can contact Lt. Joseph Lennon of the police department at 465-4101 between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

All motorists are reminded that Tuesday, Sept. 7 marked the opening of the 1999/00 school term in Garden City. Hundreds of youngsters are walking to and from school, many for the first time. Please pay particular attention when driving in the area of recommended pedestrian routes and school yards, while the number of students who will be walking to school will be dramatically increased. This will not be any different from prior years in that a few preoccupied young people will inevitably dart out from in between parked cars or fail to look for oncoming traffic when crossing the street.

While the police and crossing guards are on duty at school crossing zones, many children will be crossing at unprotected areas. Parents are urges to discuss safe practices with their children and to remind them that it is very difficult for passing motorists to see them and effect a stop.

s A reminder to motorists that the posted speed limit in the area of schools is 20 miles per hour.
