The Garden City Centennial Soccer Club is pleased to announce that the Special Children's Soccer Program will be held again this fall. This program is for children between the ages of 5 and 18 who are physically challenged, mentally challenged, or who have behavior problems which precludes them from playing in the Club's mainstream soccer program.

Sessions are scheduled to start on Saturday, Sept. 11, and will continue throughout the fall. If this program would be of interest to you for your son or daughter, or even a friend, please contact Greg Petzold at 741-5600 (days) or 747-1816 (evenings/weekends), or Skip Siegel at 741-8450.

Our Wednesday night men's basketball program has ended and will not start up again until late September.

The Village, in cooperation with Winthrop University Hospital, the Nassau County Department of Senior Services, and the Nassau County Medical Center will conduct a flu and pneumonia immunization program for the senior residents of Garden City on Tuesday, Oct. 19. this is a free, no out of pocket expense program.

This year, the program will be held at the Senior Recreation Center at 6 Golf Club Lane from 10:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 19. There will be no expense to you to participate in this program -- simply bring your Medicare card with you when you come to receive your immunization, and have your Social Security number with you, as you will need to provide that on the applicable forms which will be given to you when you arrive for your immunization.

To participate in this program, you will need to pre-register for your immunization. Pre-registration will begin on Monday, Sept. 20. Residents who are 60 years of age or older and who would be interested in receiving immunization on Oct. 19 must call the Recreation Department to make an appointment at 465-4075. Registration for appointments will be made beginning 9 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 20, and will continue until all available appointments have been assigned.

Residents should be prepared to indicate if they wish to receive just the flu immunization or if they would like the additional protection of the pneumonia immunization as well.

For further information, call 465-4075.

Our popular program of "Drop-In" tennis lessons, which is traditionally held at Grove Street Park in the spring of each year, will be returning for a fall encore beginning Tuesday, Sept. 7. This program will again be under the direction of Dick Scott and Jay Gallagher.

This program will be offered on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings beginning Sept. 7 and continuing until Sept. 30.

The cost of these lessons will be $5 per player per 1 hour class and $10 per player per 2 hour class. Call 465-4075 for more information.

While the Recreation Department is still in the process of completing construction on the second Roller Hockey Rink, Rink #1 is essentially complete, and is now open for use by residents.

This rink, located at the south end of Community Park, has the boards and fencing installed, and two new hockey nets are in the rink. The asphalt surface will receive a coating of "street ice" to make the surface smoother and more skateable. This work will be done once Rink #2 is complete, so that the Recreation Department will not have to close down the entire facility at one time.

Additionally, overhead lights will be installed early this fall, so that the facility will be available for use during evening hours during the fall and winter.

It is anticipated that there will be a series of clinics and leagues offered at the Roller Hockey facility, and a grand opening ceremony is planned for later in the year, when the remaining work is completed on both rinks. Since there continues to be a demand for roller hockey even during the summer, Rink #1 is being made available at this time.

The Roller Hockey area is open and supervised during the summer hours from noon until dark seven days per week, and the rink is available on a first come, first serve basis. All skaters must wear helmets at this location, and follow the directions of the Recreation attendant on duty at the facility.

The Garden City Centennial Soccer Club is accepting registration forms for the Fall 1999 Intramural Soccer Season. Programs will be available for all girls going into Kindergarten in Sept. 1999 through grade 8. As a result of numerous requests by players entering 9th or 10th grade this fall and would like to play intramural soccer, GCCSC will attempt to expand its program to cover those grades if there are enough registrants. If interested, please send in an application prior to August 15. (Fees will be refunded if the new division is not formed.)

Registration forms can be picked up at the Recreation Office at Village Hall, at Cluett Hall, and at the Garden City Soccer Shop. Registration forms are due for all divisions on Aug. 15.

For more information, call Randy Colahan at 248-7483 or Paul Glorioso at 294-0185.

The Garden City Centennial Soccer Club is interested in forming Intramural Tournament Teams for boys and girls in 4th grade and up. The children will play in 5-7 tournaments, as well as intramural soccer. For further information, or to place a child's name on the interested list, please call Sandy Young at 739-1305 or e-mail Randy Colohan at JRCOLA4@aol.com.
