The Long Island Region Field Hockey team started a winning streak with its second Open Division Gold Medal at the 1999 Empire State Games in Shoreham.

With an overall record of 4-1, Long Island beat the powerful New York City team on a penalty stroke after a double overtime period. They clinched their repeat State Championship with a 1-0 victory over the Central Region.

Coached by Garden City High School's own winning Linda Norton and sparked by former GCHS standout Sarah Mathers' (Quinnipiac 2002) goalkeeping and sideline banter, this could be a dynasty in the making.
