While we regret any and all of the inconvenience that construction on the Franklin Avenue Beautification Project has caused to residents, business people, pedestrians, as well as those who have been attempting to drive through our business district, I am pleased to report that the project is progressing well.

It is anticipated that most of the sidewalk work, between Stewart Avenue and Eleventh Street, will be concluded by the weeks end. The area in front of 855 Franklin Avenue, the former A&S building, will take a bit longer due to the need to waterproof the basement area, which extends under the sidewalk. The base for the fountain at the northwest corner of Franklin and Stewart is in place and the fountain will be constructed this week. With the pavers in place at the northeast corner of Franklin and Stewart, the contractor will be installing the gazebo structure.

Construction will be concentrated along the east side of Franklin Avenue from Stewart Avenue to the LIRR tracks during the next two weeks.

Residents are reminded that the August Board of Trustees Meeting of the Incorporated Village of Garden City is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 12, beginning at 8 p.m.

Those who have recently had a tree planted in the front yard by the Village are asked to take the time to water it. The proper way to water is to first loosen the soil around the tree if it has become baked hard and then allow a hose to run at the base of the tree at a rate slow enough so that the water will be absorbed into the area around the tree trunk.

Watering hours are from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Odd-numbered addresses may water on odd-numbered days and even-numbered addresses may water on even-numbered days.

Thank you for your cooperation.

The next Gazebo Concert will be held on Thursday Aug. 5 - The Village Music Makers - Great Big Band tunes and other popular standards performed by one of Long Island's favorite bands.

The remaining concert schedule is as follows:

* Thursday Aug. 12 - Libby and Company - Cool jazz for a warm summer night, with plenty of free spiritual melodies and great solos.

* Thursday Aug. 19 - Strawberry Fields - Beatles, Beatles and more Beatles from this popular "Fab Four" tribute band.

Concerts are held each Thursday evening beginning at 7:15 at the Gazebo on Village Green, which is located at the corner of Stewart and Hilton Avenues. There is no charge for admission, just bring your blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the great music under the beautiful summer sky. In the event of a less than beautiful summer sky (rain), the shows are held indoors at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall. Due to space limitations at Cluett Hall, proof of residency will be required for admission to any shows moved to this location.

For further information on these shows, please call the Recreation Department at 465-4075.
