Mr. Michael Didyk, the Village's staff arborist, has advised that he has observed low to moderate damage on Bradford pear trees in the Village. Having consulted with the Cornell Cooperative Extension Service, he has determined that the damage is due to an insect known as the pear leaf blister mite (Eriophyes puri). Symptoms are seen on the leaves which exhibit brownish yellow blisters which are 1/8 inch across and cover the entire leaf.

Mr. Didyk advises that there is nothing that can be done at this time and that he will monitor the condition to determine the need to spray in October or next spring.

As a reminder, July 31 and Aug. 1 result in two consecutive odd days. All residents with automatic sprinklers should remember to reset their clocks at this time to comply with the Village lawn watering regulations.

On Thursday, July 29 the Recreation Department will be presenting The Dinner Dogs -- a real family oriented show, featuring catchy tunes, silly antics and a good time for all.

The program, which will be held at the Garden City Gazebo, located at the corner of Hilton and Stewart Avenues, will begin at 7:15 p.m. and admission is free. Please bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a very pleasant evening.

In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall at the St. Paul's School. Please contact the Recreation Department Program Line at 742-5888 with questions pertaining to the concert.

Working in cooperation with the Village, merchants have placed tables and chairs outside their shops and restaurants for our enjoyment. Please stop by to let the merchants know you appreciate their efforts.

I urge our residents to become familiar with their local merchants and businesses and to shop in Garden City. You will be pleased with the selection, quality and commitment to customer service.
