A number of residents and business owners have expressed favorable comments over the progress that is seen along Franklin Avenue. This week pavers are being installed along the east side of Franklin Avenue from Eleventh Steet, south to Ninth Street. Demolition of the sidewalk from Ninth Street to Stewart Avenue will follow as well as activity on each of the four corners of Franklin Avenue and Stewart Avenues.

A maximum effort is being made by the Village and its contractor to minimize the disruption to businesses which are located within the project area. For this reason, the next phase will begin on the west side of Franklin Avenue at Sixth Street, in front of the Post Office, and move north toward Stewart Avenue.

A reminder to residents that the Village's law with regard to water conservation (Local Law 3-1987) is now in effect. The restrictions are:

*Lawn sprinkling and garden irrigation only from April 16 to November 30 of each year and only during the hours of 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

*The days a person may water are:

*odd numbered properties on odd numbered days

*even numbered properties on even numbered days

*properties with no numbers on even numbered days

*Automatic sprinkler systems:

*all newly installed systems must have moisture sensors approved by the Department of Public Works.

*Miscellaneous:

*all home car washing must be done with hoses fitted with spray nozzles with automatic shut-off.

*use of water for washing down driveways or walkways is prohibited

Please cooperate by observing these restrictions. The Police Department has been requested to issue appearance tickets to those persons found to be in violation of this law.

The New York State Public Service Commission has directed that all gas utilities in the state must exit the gas heating and appliance service business. Therefore, beginning July 1, Brooklyn Union of Long Island will no longer provide non-safety repair service for gas heating equipment and other appliances.

Emergency safety services will still be provided at no charge 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. Call 1-800-490-0045 if you experience any of the following situtions:

*You smell gas or suspect a gas leak

*There is low pressure (low flame) or no gas in all of your gas appliances

*Gas to an appliance or heating unit stays on and cannot be shut off

*There is a continuous flow of water leaking from your gas heating unit or water heater

*Damage, fire or flooding involving natural gas has occurred

In all cases, Brooklyn Union will respond to the emergency, but will only be permitted to make the situation safe. No repairs to gas appliances, including heating equipment, will be performed.
