The Recreation Department is pleased to announce a series of "drop-in" coached tennis programs which will be held during May and June at Grove Street Park. This program will allow residents who wish to continue to play, and receive instruction while playing, an opportunity to do so until the Community Park courts reopen for the summer. These sessions will be held under the direction of Dick Scott and Jay Gallagher.

This program will be offered on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings beginning on Tuesday, May 18 and continuing until Thursday, June 3, according to the following schedule: Tuesdays - 9 - 10 a.m. - Beginner Tennis (fundamentals of the game); 10 a.m. to noon - Women's Intermediate Level Doubles (Moderate Competitive Level). Wednesdays - 9 - 10 a.m. - Advanced Beginner; 10 a.m. - noon - coached while playing doubles one court for men, one court for co-ed. Thursdays - 9 - 10 a.m. - intermediate lessons) getting into the game situations); 10 a.m. to noon - Women Interested in the Competitive Edge for the ladies interested in tuning their game for summer leagues, tournaments etc. Geared for the stronger and more competitive female players. The cost of these sessions will be $5 per player for the one-hour class and $10 per player for the two-hour class, fees are payable at the courts at the time of the session.

Once again, the Recreation Department is pleased to offer our residents several exciting and fun-filled Youth Sports Camps. These camps are held at the Community Park complex, and at the Saint Paul's Campus.

This year, camps will be held in baseball, basketball, boy's lacrosse, soccer and tennis. Details of each camp appear below, and additional information may be obtained by calling the Recreation Department at 742-5800.

The Youth Baseball Camp will be held at Community Park during the weeks of July 19 to 22 and July 26 to 29. This camp will be under the direction of Bob Defliese, coach with the Garden City Schools.

This instructional program is offered for boys and girls ages 6 to 13 in two hour sessions, and youngsters may attend for either one or two weeks. Sessions are held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. for youngsters 6 to 8 years old, and from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for youngsters 9 to 13 years old.

The cost of this camp is $50 per youngster for one week (four two-hour session), and $100 per youngster for two weeks (eight two-hour session), which includes a T-shirt and certificate of completion. There will be a limit of 50 children per session.

The Youth Basketball Camp will be held at the Saint Paul's Field House during the weeks of June 28 to July 1 and July 6 to July 9. This camp will be under the direction of Tom Gleeson, former basketball coach at the US Merchant Marine Academy. The purpose of this camp is to provide instruction in self-improvement, basketball fundamentals, team play, group cooperation and most importantly, fun!

The basketball camp will be offered in two session. The first, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. will be for boys and girls entering grades three and four in September 1999. The second, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. will be for boys and girls entering grades five and six in September 1999. There will be a limit of 40 children per session.

The cost of this camp is $50 per youngster per week. which includes a T-shirt and certificate of completion.

The Boys Lacrosse Camp will be held at the Saint Paul's athletic fields during the weeks of July 6 to 9, and July 12 to 15. This camp will be under the direction of Bob Defliese and Wally Cook. This camp will focus on the basic techniques of catching, throwing, scooping and will then move into drills and the rules of the game.

The Boys Lacrosse camp will be offered in two session. The first, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. will be for boys entering grades five and six in September 1999. The second, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. will be for boys entering grades three and four in September 1999. There will be a limit of 30 boys per session.

The cost of this camp is $50 per youngster per week, which includes a T-shirt and certificate of completion.

The Youth Soccer Camp will be held at the Community Park complex during the weeks of August 2 to 6, and August 9 to 13. This camp will be under the direction of Paul LeSueur of the Recreation Staff and former member of the New York Cosmos professional soccer team. The camp staff will be comprised of both present and former successful collegiate players. This camp will provide expert instruction on individual skill development. Youngsters in each age category will be further divided into appropriate skill levels with the instructor/camper ratio not exceeding 1 to 10. Safe playing techniques and team cooperation will also be stressed.

The camp will be offered in both two-hour and five hour sessions, and youngsters may attend for either one or two weeks. Youngsters must be entering first-grade in September 1999 in order to participate in the camp and proof of age may be required.

The two-hour sessions will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and will cost $50 per youngster for five days, and $100 for 10 days.

The five hour sessions will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and will include a one-hour lunch and swim break, supervised by the Camp Staff. The five hour session will cost $100 for one week, and $200 for two weeks. Cost of the camp also includes a T-shirt and certificate of completion.

The Youth Tennis Camp will be held at the Community Park courts during the weeks of June 28 to July 1, July 6 to July 9, July 12 to July 15, July 19 to July 22, Aug. 2 to Aug. 5, Aug. 9 to Aug. 12, Aug. 16 to Aug. 19, and Aug. 23 to Aug. 26. This camp will be under the direction of Laszlo Jurak, Community Park head pro and Jo Appollonio, assistant head pro.

This camp will be offered for youngsters ages 6 to 12, in both two hour and five hour sessions. Youngsters will be grouped by ability within their age groups.

The two-hour sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. or from 1 to 3 p.m. The two-hour session will stress basic strokes and techniques. The two-hour sessions will cost $50 for four days. The five-hour session will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The five-hour session will focus on extra skill work, with additional play and game strategy sessions in the afternoon. The five-hour sessionalso includes a lunch and swim break supervised by the camp staff. The five hour session will cost $100 for four days. There will be a limit of 24 youngsters per two-hour session. Cost of the camp includes a T-shirt and certificate of completion.

The Garden City Centennial Travel Soccer Program is looking for people interested in coaching the new Under 11 Boys "C" Travel team which will begin league play in September. If you would like further information or an application, please call Rick Harken at 747-0350. All applications must be received by May 23. Tryouts will be held for this team in mid June.

Membership Application Packages for the 1999 season of the Garden City Pool are being mailed to all Village residents this weekend.

The pool will open for its 43rd season at noon on Saturday, June 12. Application packages include the membership application, swim lesson information and a colorful brochure which details all of the activities and events which will be offered to members this season.

As a reminder, since the Garden City Pool is not tax supported, and is financed only through membership fees, Village residents who do not take a membership at the pool are not eligible to use the pool or to participate in the many special events which are offered there. Please read the pool brochure carefully and become familiar with all of the enjoyment which is available to your family prior to deciding not to join. A Pool Membership continues to be one of the best entertainment and leisure values, providing seven day a week fun for your family throughout the hot summer months.

The Recreation Department is pleased to announce that our popular Adult Tennis Lessons, under the direction of Dick Scott and Jay Gallagher, will once again be offered at the Community Park Tennis Courts, according to the schedule below. Registration for these lessons will be held at the Recreation Office in Village Hall beginning May 24.

Monday:

Adult Beginner Lessons 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. $75 per person

Women's Coached While Playing 5:30 - 7 p.m. $100 per person

Men's Coached While Playing 7 - 8:30 p.m. $100 per person

Tuesdays:

Sr. Citizen Lessons 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. $75 per person
