On Sunday, Feb. 28, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island will be hosting its annual Bowl for Kids Sake Celebrity Day bowlathon featuring the New York Islanders at the AMF Sheridan Bowl in Mineola from noon to 4 p.m. This year's bowlathon will prove to be especially exciting and meaningful for the agency. As part of the day's festivities, a special presentation will be made to honor The New York Islanders for their strong support and long-standing commitment to Big Brothers Big Sisters over the past 20 years. Each year the Islanders come out in full force and take to the lanes in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Their goal is to score big ¬ for Long Island's youth. Everyone is invited to join the Islanders, WLIR deejays and News 12 Long Island personalities, and bowl a game to raise funds to provide volunteer mentors for children in need of guidance and support. Adding to the day's excitement, sponsorship opportunities are available to actually have sponsoring companies or individuals reserve a lane to bowl a game with a New York Islander and your team of four bowlers. This sponsorship opportunity includes a full page ad in the keepsake journal honoring the New York Islanders, a buffet luncheon and more. To receive information on this package, please call 731-7880, ext. 104. To sign up for this year's bowlathon, simply call Big Brothers Big Sisters at 731-7880 to reserve your lane and time. Sponsor sheets are mailed to all registered participants in advance allowing them to sign up friends, family members or co-workers to sponsor them for a few cents per pin, or a flat donation. Anyone who raises $75 or more will automatically receive a gift certificate to a selected store or mall. The more you raise the more valuable the gift certificate. Big Brothers Big Sisters will also be collecting donations of unwanted clothing at this year's bowlathon. Bring a bag of clothing that day and you'll be entered into a special raffle drawing. Unwanted clothing and small household goods are collected from all over Long Island by the Big Brothers Big Sisters Donation Center. Donations can be made all year long by calling 234-0000 to arrange for a free home pick-up or by asking for the nearest clothing drop-off location. Big Brothers Big Sisters' mission is to provide an opportunity for positive growth and enrichment to children in need. This is accomplished through the companionship provided by a trusted and caring mentor, and in the provision of support services to families. An independent study proved that a child who has a "Big Brother" or a "Big Sister" in his or her life is less likely to start using drugs or alcohol, is less likely to skip school and has improved relationships with both peers and parents. Now more than ever children need strong guidance and positive role models to ensure that they are the hope of tomorrow rather than a community concern. For further information on services available or to volunteer, please call 731-7880.
