The Central Property Owners' Association unanimously nominated candidates for two Village positions on Tuesday, Jan. 19. Bruce Torino was renominated for his current position as a member of the Village Board of Trustees. Ken Monaghan was nominated for a position as a member of the Board of Education.

Ken Monaghan has most recently served on the Ad Hoc Citizens' Advisory Committee that was appointed by the School Board to evaluate the defeated school bond of 1997 and help construct a new bond, an effort which resulted in the new bond referendum passed in December 1998.

The Central Property Owners' Association's Nominating Committee opted not to renominate Bryan Rudy, who is currently serving the Central section as a School Board trustee, and has been on the Board for several years. In acknowledging Rudy's absence from the CPOA meeting, CPOA President Dr. Barbara Miller extended her thanks for his service to Central on the Board.

"Even though he is not here tonight, I would like to thank Mr. Rudy for his work for the past three years," she said.

Bruce Torino then expressed his gratitude for his renomination, and later spent a considerable portion of the meeting answering questions after a presentation to the CPOA about the St. Paul's playing fields project.

Work has yet to start on the project, and in response to the questions, Torino noted that part of the goal of the project was to preserve the Village's other fields.

"In some ways, this project is an attempt to manage our resources better and to some extent have some of those resources lie fallow," he said.

In a report on Village Board activities, Torino noted plans are under way to develop arguments against the further expansion of the Roosevelt Field Mall, which will be presented before the Town of Hempstead's Zoning Board of Appeals on Feb. 4 at 9:30 a.m. in the pavilion behind Town Hall in Hempstead. All residents are encouraged to come lend support.

In a report from School Board Trustee John Klupka, a Jan. 28 public meeting about the district's superintendent search was announced. Current Superintendent Dr. Lee Wilson is not seeking a contract renewal. (See the release from the district on page 8 for more details.)
